Dr. Linda K. Ballard was born to Malvin and Sylvia Brown in Charleston, WVA on December 26th, 1953. Linda was the youngest of 8 children. Linda’s mother became ill and chose Mitchell and Blanche Ballard to adopt Linda before she passed. Mitchell and Blanche, friends of the family, welcomed Linda as their own. Linda was blessed with two families.

After Linda graduated from Stone Wall Jackson High School in Charleston, she discovered a passion for nursing. She attended Berea College, in Berea, Ky, and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Prior to returning to Berea College, Linda was employed as a pediatric nurse at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, WVA and at Shriner’ Hospital for Crippled Children in Lexington, Ky.

In 1994, Linda joined the nursing faculty of Somerset Community College as Nursing Coordinator of the Associate Degree of Nursing Program and continued in that role until her retirement in 2020. Reva Mink Biddix ’54
Aug. 15, 2022

George Edwin Biddix, Jr., and Reva Mink Biddix of Rutherfordton, N.C., passed away on August 14 and August 15, respectively, at the Carolina Hospice House in Forest City, N.C.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, October 7, 2022 at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Rutherfordton. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall.

Reva was born on April 14, 1931 in Bell County, Kentucky. She was one of 12 children born to Lutisha Wilder Mink and Thomas Harrison Mink. After high school, Reva graduated with honors from Berea College with a degree in Education. She was an elementary teacher until her retirement.

Ed was born on May 7, 1934 to Pansy Hennessee Biddix and George Edwin Biddix, Sr. Ed graduated from Berea College with a degree in Horticulture and later earned a Master’s Degree from N.C. State University. He worked with the Agricultural Extension Service in Northampton, Vance, Caldwell, Buncombe and Rutherford counties until his retirement.

Reva, a vivacious, fun-loving young woman, met Ed, a quiet, soft-spoken young man, at Berea, and they eloped while still in college. They settled eventually in western North Carolina, where they would raise their two daughters and live out their lives. Ed and Reva were married for 66 years. They were inseparable for the last few years of their lives, taking care of each other and spending a lot of time holding hands.

Ed and Reva were polar opposites, even physically: Ed was a foot taller than Reva. Reva loved to tell jokes, laugh uproariously at her own jokes, read newspapers (at one time she subscribed to at least four) with a good cup of coffee, and grow flowers in her yard. She had a creative sense of what it meant to be on time. Ed, on the other hand, was extremely punctual, quiet and loved to be outside on his tractor at his grandfather’s old farm in McDowell County. Ed always made sure his girls’ windshields were scraped before school on frosty mornings, cars were warmed up and ready to go with a full tank of gas. He always had cash on hand to slip to his girls “just in case.”

Ed and Reva were faithful members of the First Presbyterian Church for 54 years. Church life and worship were very important to both of them. They were continually blessed by the cards, calls and visits from their dedicated pastor and members of their congregation. Ed and Reva loved their church family and were shown much love in return.

Ed and Reva had a simple life together, but it was exactly what they wanted. Watching Jeopardy together, sitting on their patio enjoying their flowers and eating Reva’s blueberry torte were some of the things that they enjoyed. They had the same values: loyalty, a strong sense of right and wrong, fairness and inclusiveness. And their devotion and love for each other never wavered.

Ed and Reva were devoted, selfless parents who always put their family first. As dedicated as they both were to their professions, they believed raising good citizens was their most important responsibility. Later, they delighted in their grandchildren and great-grandchildren and bragged on them unabashedly to friends.

As difficult and unimaginable as it was to lose both Ed and Reva at the same time, they would have wanted to be together. The family believes that Ed passed away, then waited patiently at the gates of Heaven knowing Reva would come… she would just take her sweet time. Twelve hours later, she arrived, they joined hands and entered eternal life together.

Ed and Reva are survived by their daughters, Lisa Biddix Royal (Steve) and Linda Biddix Stephenson (Henry); their grandchildren Emily Stephenson Austin (Brian), Henry Louis Stephenson IV (Andrea), Stephen Robert Royal, Jr. (fiancée Heather), Rebecca Hampton Stephenson (fiancé Michael) and Elizabeth Harrison Royal (fiancé Andrew); great-grandchildren Adeline Rebecca and Margaret Wilder Austin; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church (P.O. Box 1133, Rutherfordton, N.C. 28139), Norris Public Library Foundation (132 N. Main Street, Rutherfordton, N.C. 28139) or Hospice of the Carolina Foothills (P.O. Box 336, Forest City, N.C. 28043).

Dr. Simon D. Perry ’54
Jan. 27, 2023

Simon Daniel Perry, 92, beloved Marshall University political science professor who inspired generations of students, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2023 in the embrace of his loving wife of sixty-six years, Frances Hickman Perry. Simon was born on January 16, 1931 in Baisden, West Virginia. He grew up in a farmhouse on Gilbert Creek in Mingo County with his beloved parents, Hallie Cline and Uley Perry, his brothers and sisters, and his Uncle Milt Thompson. As he once wrote to his parents, he loved his childhood: “Sitting on the front porch on Sunday afternoons listening to all of the adults talk about politics, religion, and the end of time I have never found a kinder, more loving place or [a place] with greater goodness than that found on Gilbert Creek.” His childhood would inform his politics, shape his priorities, and provide the background for many of his memorable classroom stories. Simon graduated from Berea College in 1954, earning A.B. degrees in political science and history and a minor in philosophy. He was elected student body president and founded Berea College’s first model United Nations. It was at Berea that he witnessed the painful realities of segregation. The town was a typical 1950s Southern town, and his Black classmates were excluded from many of the town’s eating establishments. Simon organized boycotts of the businesses that would not serve Black students. In his valedictory address at Berea, he implored the community to do better: “It is just for us to treat all peoples with respect, dignity, and understanding. It is unjust and plain conceit for one person to discriminate against another on the basis of race, color, or creed. It is time that you should recognize that segregation is bad, and it would be good of you, if you could become concerned enough, to lend a hand in putting it to its death bed.” After college graduation, Simon returned to Gilbert Creek, anticipating that he would quickly be drafted through the Selective Training and Service Act. As the weeks dragged on with no conscription, his older sister, Garnet, shamed him for not working. He accepted an offer to teach at Williamson High School, where he met the love of his life, a young chemistry teacher named Frances Hickman. As much as he enjoyed teaching at Williamson, however, his career there was short-lived. Believing in Simon’s potential for an academic career, one of his Berea college professors connected him to an instructor’s position at the University of Tennessee to support his graduate studies, so Simon moved with his new wife Frances to Knoxville, where he earned a master’s degree in political science in 1955. Simon and Frances then moved to East Lansing, Michigan, where he earned his Ph.D. in political science from Michigan State University, completing his coursework in 1961. He joined the faculty at the University of Michigan, where he finished his doctoral dissertation, which won the Leonard D. White Award, presented annually by the American Political Science Association to honor the nation’s best dissertation in the field of public administration. In 1962, Simon joined the Political Science Department at Marshall University as an associate professor. He retired from active duty teaching 48 years later as professor emeritus, making his tenure as a faculty member the longest in the university’s history. Simon taught tens of thousands of students in his long career. He inspired many careers in public service, including teaching and academia, but also in other fields, such as law, journalism, and social work. He developed many courses while at Marshall, including student favorites “Public Opinion and Propaganda” and “Politics in History,” as well as a concentration in constitutional democracy comprising courses that he created, focusing on transformative leaders, moments, and eras in United States political history. According to Marshall Professor of Social Work and civil rights activist Dr. Philip W. Carter, Jr., in the early 1960s, Simon created the first civil rights course of study at a predominantly white university in the South. Simon encouraged his students and others to engage in activism to achieve their goals and created a learning environment where students could explore divergent views through civil discourse and thoughtful interaction. Simon contributed to the university in many ways in addition to teaching, including serving as Chair of the Political Science Department for many years. He was proud to have drafted the university’s faculty constitution, and was recognized in various ways for his excellence in teaching. His numerous honors include being awarded the Marshall University Distinguished Service Award in 1990, being named the first Distinguished Drinko Fellow by the John Deaver Drinko Academy for Political Institutions and Civic Culture in 1994-95. He won the College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Teaching Award in 2001, 2004, and 2010. In 2007, he was voted one of Marshall’s top five “Living Legends” by alumni, colleagues, and then-current students. He was twice recognized with the prestigious Distinguished West Virginian award, presented to him by Governor Arch Moore in 1988 and Governor Joe Manchin in 2007. His influence extended beyond the university. During the administration of U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Simon was invited to the White House to participate in a conference on the Strategic Arms Limitation treaty (SALT II). Upon his retirement, recognizing his profound influence on generations of Marshall students and on his community, Marshall University decided to establish a constitution center in his name, with a mission of ensuring that his legacy would be preserved. The Simon Perry Center for Constitutional Democracy was launched in 2011. The center comprises an interdisciplinary academic program that includes courses in political science, history, philosophy, English, and sociology; a centralized university-wide pre-law program, and a significant public education outreach initiative through its Amicus Curiae Lecture Series on Constitutional Democracy, which brings noted scholars from throughout the country to campus to lecture on issues related to law, politics, and governance. The lecture series is supported by the West Virginia Humanities Council and the lectures, which are free and open to the public, are recorded and later aired as a program on West Virginia public television. The center is directed by Simon’s former student and dear friend, Patricia Proctor, who transitioned from a 20-year career as a practicing attorney to become its founding director. Simon was always a voracious reader, engaging not only in the academic reading of the American Political Science Review and the Journal of Politics, but also devouring books focused on history, philosophy, politics, and literature. His personal library included thousands of well-read volumes. Simon also wrote books himself, including Morality, Self Interest, and the Cities (1997) and Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson: By Their Deeds You Shall Know Them (2013). Simon was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, inspired by Hall of Famer Stan Musial’s career. He watched Musial play for the Williamson, West Virginia RedBirds minor league team from 1939-40 before going on to star for the Cardinals. Simon was a loyal follower of the team for the rest of his life. Simon was very close to his family and cherished his wife, his three sons, David, Paul, and Thomas, and his daughter, Kelly. He had a special connection to his daughters-in-law, Diane and Jennifer, and his son-in-law, David Vaziri. He doted on his ten granddaughters and two great-granddaughters. Simon and Frances adored their “adopted daughter” Razia Bennoui, an Afghan immigrant who lost her family to the Taliban. They became mother and father to her and grandparents to her four children, Eddie, Elias, Nadia, and Riyad. Many years ago, Simon was deeply moved by 19th century lawyer, writer, and orator Robert Ingersoll’s obituary for his brother, Ebon. The words in this eulogy could have been written for Simon: “This brave and tender man in every storm of life was oak and rock; but in the sunshine he was vine and flower. He was the friend of all heroic souls. He climbed the heights and left all superstitions far below, while on his forehead fell the golden dawning of the grander day. He loved the beautiful and was with color, form, and music touched to tears. He sided with the weak, the poor, and wronged, and lovingly gave alms. With loyal heart and with the purest hands he faithfully discharged all public trusts. He was a worshiper of liberty, a friend of the oppressed. A thousand times I have heard him quote these words: ‘”For Justice all place a temple, and all season, summer!”‘ He believed that happiness was the only good reason, the only torch, justice the only worship, humanity the only religion, and love the only priest. He added to the sum of human joy; and were everyone to whom he did some loving service to bring a blossom to his grave, he would sleep to-night beneath a wilderness of flowers.” Simon was preceded in death by his parents; his son Paul Perry, his beloved Uncle Milt Thompson, and his cherished siblings Betty Perry; Thurman Perry; Mervil Perry; Garnet Perry Van Horn and Garnet’s husband Cliff Van Horn; and Kathy Perry Punturi and her husband Al Punturi. Simon is survived by his wife, Frances, sons David Perry and Thomas Perry, and daughter Kelly Perry Vaziri, as well as by his son-in-law David Vaziri and his daughters-in-law Jennifer Jones Perry (Thomas’s wife) and Diane Wilson Perry. He is also survived by adoring granddaughters Kelli Dixon and her husband, Shawn Dixon; Elizabeth Vaziri and her husband, Jake Van Koevering; Charlotte Vaziri, Madeleine Vaziri, and Carolyn Vaziri; Katherine Perry, Anna Perry, Leisl Perry, Elizabeth Perry, and Genevieve Perry, as well as his great-granddaughters, Chloe and Lilly Dixon. He is also survived by his siblings, Huey Perry and Huey’s wife Jill; Winston Perry and Winston’s wife Joyce; Drema Perry Ferrell and Drema’s husband, Carl Ferrell, and by his sister-in-law Dreama Perry, who was married to his brother Mervil. Simon leaves behind many nieces and nephews he adored, as well as countless cousins, colleagues, and friends. The family will have a small, private funeral and interment on Saturday, February 4, 2023. Arrangements are being made with Henson and Kitchen Mortuary and Cremation Services, 6357 E. Pea Ridge Rd. Huntington, WV near Barboursville. A public memorial service honoring his amazing life and career will be hosted at Marshall University on a date to be announced soon. Loring H. Vance Jr. ’55
March 31, 2023

On the evening of March 31, 2023, Loring Hugh “Jim” Vance, Jr., age 90, while surrounded by family, was called by his loving Savior to come to his heavenly home. He was a resident at the E.A. Hawse Nursing Center where he had been the past 8 months. Jim was born in Fisher, WV to the late Mary Weese and Loring Hugh Vance, Sr. on July 18, 1932. Soon thereafter the family moved to Moorefield and Jim attended Moorefield Elementary School. During these years a small group of the local boys played together and named themselves “The Cat Alley Gang”. With ingenuity they often devised games using such items as soda pop bottle caps. They also daringly jumped off bridges into the rivers. Each gang member was given a nickname and Loring’s was “Jim”, and it stuck with him his whole life. Jim graduated from Moorefield High School in 1951. His greatest enthusiasm was basketball. He walked to school for early morning practices before the bell rang for class. He was a member of the 1949 Moorefield High School team that won the WV State Tournament; the only Moorefield team to achieve this honor. In his junior year he was chosen to attend Boy’s State, a week of learning about WV government with the climax of electing candidates for local and state offices. At graduation he received the Good Citizen Award. In the fall of 1951 he entered Berea College in Berea, KY. He worked his way through college earning a B.S. degree in history and political science. He was the sports editor of the college newspaper. Jim loved basketball. Sometimes he hitch hiked to Lexington to watch Adolph Rupp’s basketball team play. Several times he and fellow Berea classmate Bob Hulver hitch hiked the 500 miles to come home. Jim’s first teaching job was at Ketterman, a one room school up a holler near Moorefield. He taught grades one through eight. He was his own janitor and at times he and the students even cooked lunch. He had very fond memories of his experiences at Ketterman. In 1956-57 Jim was hired as a history and physical education teacher at Mathias High School. He coached an upset defeat of Moorefield HS, game score 72-55. The 1957-58 team won the Sectional Tournament. Considering a vocation in ministry, he resigned teaching; but later a change of mind found him again teaching in elementary school and assisting Coach George Hott in football 1960-63. In 1966 he returned to Mathias HS where he coached baseball for a total of 13 years and basketball for 19 years. In the same year he started the first Junior High Team. Most of those years he had no assistant coach, but Annabelle stood by his side and helped in many ways. In 1969 he was honored as the PVC Basketball Coach of the Year; and that year his team finished with a 21-2 record. In 1973 he earned his Master of Arts Degree from WVU. Jim taught 8th grade WV history for 15 years and had 20 winners of the WV Golden Horse Shoe award. Each winner went to Charleston and was dubbed a Knight or Lady of the WV Golden Horse Shoe. Jim was also awarded an Honorary WV Golden Horse Shoe. He was very proud of his student winners. In addition to Jim’s many accomplishments in the education world, he was a prolific writer and recorded many histories of his experiences and those of the community. Jim was a member of the Mathias Brethren Church for many years where he taught Sunday school, was a deacon, and helped with many church activities such as apple butter boiling and Christmas pageants. He was currently a member of Bethlehem Brethren Church in Harrisonburg. On June 23, 1962 he married Annabelle Fitzwater at the Mathias Brethren Church by Rev. George Solomon. He is survived by his wife and they celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2022. They loved to travel and were able to visit all but four of the continental United States as well as parts of Canada. Both were avid WV football and basketball fans and they attended many, many games together. He is also survived by sister-in-law’s Janie Lester (Donnie) and Janet Vance; nephews Greg Vance, Jeff Vance (Maddie), Greg Michael (Sherry), Leonard Fitzwater (Ellen) and a niece Tammy Crites (Roger). Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Vance, a sister, Dorothy Michael (Gene) and a niece, Linda Kay Michael. Pastor Jim Corbitt, Pastor Freddie Helsley and Pastor Kent Bennet will conduct a memorial service Thursday at 2:00 pm at the Mathias Ruritan School Gymnasium, 56 Ruritan Dr, Mathias, WV, with burial following in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway on Wednesday evening from 6:00 8:00 PM. Friends may stop by the funeral home from 9 AM 4 PM Tuesday or Wednesday to and view. Memorial contributions may be sent to Mathias High School Hall of Honor, c/o Willard Barb, 18836 State Rd 259, Mathias, WV 26812.

Ed Biddix Jr. ’57
Aug. 14, 2022

Dr. William A. Thomas
Spouse of Rachel Leach Thomas ’58
Oct. 1, 2022

Dr. William Andrew Thomas, age 86, of Tuscaloosa, passed away on October 1, 2022 at his residence. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 7, 2022 at 2:00PM at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel, with Bro. Kenneth Wyatt officiating. A visitation will be held one hour preceding the service.

Dr. Thomas is survived by his wife of 65 years Rachel Leach Thomas; daughters: Carolyn Thomas Mars (Lyle) and Amy Thomas Orr (Robert); grandchildren: Davis Orr (Madeline), James Orr (Monica), Christopher Orr (Grace), John Orr (Emilee) and William Mars.

He was born July 23, 1936, at Berea, Kentucky, the oldest son of Davis Norman Thomas and Delphia Bennett Thomas. He grew up and completed high school in McKee, Kentucky. In the beginning, William Andrew was called Tom by family and close friends, and later in life, his friends and colleagues called him Bill. He received B.S. (1956) and M.S. (1957) degrees in geology from the University of Kentucky, where he lettered in varsity track and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While a student at UK, he met Rachel Leach, a student at Berea College. Tom and Rachel were married August 24, 1957, and went off together to Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. Rachel completed B.S. (1958) and M.S. (1959) degrees in child development, while Tom completed his Ph.D. degree in geology later in 1959.

In 1959, they moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where Bill was employed as a petroleum geologist with The California Company (later Chevron). They moved back and forth between Jackson and New Orleans, Louisiana, while Bill worked on wells in the Gulf Coast, both on-shore and off-shore. During their two stays in Jackson, Mississippi, their two daughters, Carolyn and Amy, were born.

In 1963, a change of career took them into academic life at Birmingham-Southern College. Over the next 47 years, Dr. Thomas held faculty positions at Birmingham-Southern College, Queens College of City University of New York, Georgia State University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Kentucky. He retired as the James S. Hudnall Professor of Geology at the University of Kentucky in June, 2010. Although he achieved tenure at all five institutions and was department chair at four of them, his greatest satisfaction was in working with students in their research. In all, 16 Ph.D. students and 26 M.S. students completed their degrees under his direction.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Thomas maintained an active research program, publishing more than 150 journal articles and making more than 200 presentations at professional meetings. He was invited to present seminars at more than 60 institutions and organizations. He made presentations in 37 different U.S. states and 15 other countries from Norway to Argentina, Uruguay, New Zealand, China, and Switzerland.

His research was varied and evolved over the years. The main topics included the geology of mountain belts, especially the Appalachians and Ouachitas; the plate-tectonic history of the continental margins of North America and its predecessors, including his most-cited paper on promontories and embayments at transform offsets of the eastern rifted margin; the rifting of the Argentine Precordillera from southern North America (technically Laurentia) and the later accretion to Gondwana (now South America); the use of detrital zircons to determine the dispersal of sediment across parts of the continent; and the geologic causes of concentrations of earthquakes within the North American continent.

Dr. Thomas was active in professional organizations, especially the Geological Society of America (GSA). He served as Editor of the GSA Bulletin, one of the most important geological journals in the world; and he was a Councilor and later President (2004-2006) of GSA. He also served on the Board and as Treasurer of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents, as Treasurer of the American Geological Institute, and as a Member of the Management Board of the Association of Earth Science Editors. He was a long-time member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and of the Society for Sedimentary Geology. He was proud to be a Charter Member of the Alabama Geological Society.

After his retirement from the University of Kentucky, Bill and Rachel made one last move, to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he has been a Visiting Scientist at the Geological Survey of Alabama since 2010. The place at the Survey has provided an opportunity to pursue his life-long research in the geology of the Appalachian Mountains in Alabama, as well as more regionally. He enjoyed the opportunity to do research without other responsibilities, and wrote some of his most notable publications during these recent years. The location in Tuscaloosa, on the campus of the University of Alabama, had the additional benefit that four of Tom’s and Rachel’s grandsons (Davis, James, Christopher, and John, sons of Amy and Robert Orr, who live in Birmingham) were students at UA and have dropped by grandpaw’s office from time to time. We enjoyed many meals together. Daughter Carolyn and her husband Dr. John (Lyle) Mars live in Fairhope, AL; their son, William, graduated from Christopher Newport University in Virginia and he is employed in Washington D.C. area, visits his grandparents in Tuscaloosa frequently. Seeing his grandsons as university students has provided many new perspectives for an old professor, although both of his daughters took a class he taught at the University of Alabama.

1960s

James P. Blair Fd. ’53, ’60
Feb. 17, 2023

Rev. James P. Blair, 89 of Harlan, entered his eternal home to the words “Well done, good and faithful servant” on February 17.

Jim was born on June 10, 1933, to Ben & Belle (Clark) Blair. He was raised in various towns across Kentucky. Jim served his country in the Army during the Korean War from 1953-1956. After returning home, he continued his military service in the Army Reserves. Jim began his pursuit of higher education at Berea College. The greatest treasure he ever found was at a folk dance at Berea College, when he discovered his lifelong dance partner Martha Fitch Blair. They wed on December 31, 1957.

Words seem inadequate in summing up a life as well lived as Jim’s was. He pastored his little church on the hill, Sunny Acres First Church of God, for over 40 years. Even after he “retired,” he continued to shepherd those who trusted him as their pastor. Jim was a faithful servant of his Lord & Savior, even during his final months in hospice care. He never wavered in the goodness of God, despite his physical circumstances.

Jim retired as Director of Admissions and Counseling from the Cumberland Campus of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College. Many times, students he had counseled and encouraged to pursue higher education would seek him out to thank him for how he had shaped their life through his role at the college.

Even in retirement Jim never slowed down. He and Martha were foster parents for 20 years, helping countless children through difficult times in their lives. He enjoyed gardening and caring for small farm animals. Through his ministry at Sunny Acres, coupled with teaching his love of folk dancing in area schools, he became “Pa Jim” to many children in Harlan County that he meant so much to.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents: Ben & Belle (Clark) Blair. Special foster parents, Howard and Maude Bramlett. His son Ken Blair, whom he affectionately called Ken-dew. Brothers: Alp Blair and John L. Blair. Sister: Janice Ball Fields. Brothers-in-Law: Curtis Fitch and Verdin Fitch. Sister-in-law, Ardella Green. Former son-in-law, Steve Sergent.

Left to mourn Jim’s passing are his wife of 65 years, Martha E. Blair. His daughter, Sheila Kaye (Dave) Marantette. Three granddaughters: Becky (TJ) Riggs, Hannah (Eric) Greene, and Rachel (Henry) Tully. Four great-grandchildren: Leah, Isaac, Alia, and Elliot James. Sister, Elizabeth Wills. Sister-in-law, Bonnie (Raymond) Grigsby. Brothers-in-law Tom (Debbie) Fitch, Mikel (Barbara) Fitch, and Otis R. (Barbara) Fitch. A bonus son, Stephen Moore. George S. Giffin ’66
March 20, 2023

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” – Les Brown

George Searle Giffin, beloved and respected by many the world over for his kindness, generosity, and resolute loyalty to peace and justice, landed among the stars on March 20, 2023.

In 1965 George distinguished himself as a participant in the Martin Luther King Jr march to Montgomery, AL, following a visit to Selma with fellow students and recruiting others from Berea College, Berea, KY, to the Montgomery march.

From that time forward, George devoted his life to peace and the Civil Rights Movement, attending functions in Memphis, TN, and pilgrimages to Selma and Montgomery in 2005 and 2015. He shared his civil rights stories at a convocation at Berea College in 2020. George was an active member of the Detroit MLK Day Committee for twelve years, for which he was given the Spirit of Detroit award for his service to the committee and for his participation in the Selma march. He served as member of Citizens for Peace, 2014 to 2023, and was guest speaker for the January 2021 meeting, relating his civil rights experiences.

Born on September 24, 1944, George was the only son of Robert Twing Giffin (1912-1957) and Mary Ellen Brown Giffin (1910-1992), brother to Mary Brown Giffin Beattie (1938-2018) and Susan Goodrich Giffin (1942-), father to Karen Michele Giffin Jackson, father-in-law to Bobby Jackson, grandfather to Samantha Breecher, Bobby Jackson, Jr., Christina Hagan, Lisa Jackson, Isaac Jackson, and great grandfather to JC Hagan.

George graduated from Farmington Senior High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in History and Political Science from Berea College, Berea, KY. He studied Literacy Journalism at Syracuse University, Syracuse NY, at the same time he performed his Vietnam alternate service from 1966-1970 at Laubach Literacy, Inc., as its national director and personal assistant to world literacy pioneer, Dr. Frank C. Laubach.

From there, George became management program and assistant remodeling manager for the K-Mart Corporation, Troy, MI, 1970-1980; program manager for Junior Achievement in Detroit, 1981-82; executive director for Junior Achievement, Flint, MI, 1983-89; vice president of marketing for Colorama, a family-owned thermo-chromatic apparel business, 1990-94; and a research/marketing assistant for Engineering Labs: Agramo Agricultural Project, 1994-2001.

One of President Lyle Roelof’s last acts was to honor George Griffin with a special award; only 18 people have received this recognition from the office of president. It’s the President’s Medallion, on display in the president’s office. This recognition reflects the president’s heartfelt appreciation for George’s commitment to the Fifth Great Commitment.

“When I am gone, don’t learn to live without me, just learn to live with my love in a different way. And if you need to see me, close your eyes or look in your shadow when the sun shines. I’m there. Sit with me in the quiet, and you will know that I did not leave. When I go, don’t learn to live without me, just learn to look for me in the moments. I will be there.”
