John Paul Little, born on April 22, 1935, in Richmond, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was 90 years old.
John’s life was marked by a profound dedication to music and education. A talented musician and educator, he pursued his studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, the University of Louisville, and the University of Kentucky. His passion for music led him to serve as a member of the prestigious 1st Army Band in New York City during his military service—a remarkable achievement as this was the highest band a draftee could audition into.
Following his military service, John embarked on a distinguished career as a band director and educator. He inspired countless students through his roles at Manual High School, Atherton High School, Shawnee High School, Valparaiso University, Edinboro State University, and Berea College. At Berea College, he served as the head of the music education department and taught applied brass and humanities. His commitment to fostering musical talent and enriching the lives of his students left an indelible mark on every institution he served.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John found joy in sports and recreation. He enjoyed playing tennis, ping pong, and baseball—activities that brought him camaraderie and happiness throughout his life.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis Little. He is survived by his son, John Little II.
John Paul Little’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with his music and teaching. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

Jane Ellen Baucom Stephenson (1938-2026), wife of the seventh president of Berea College John B. Stephenson, and founder of the New Opportunity School for Women, passed away on May 2, 2026, surrounded by loved ones after a brief stay in the hospital.
Jane was born in Banner Elk, NC, to Helen and Braxton Baucom, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband John B. Stephenson, who died in 1994. She is survived by her three children, Jennifer Stephenson McLamb (JP Cordray), Rebecca Stephenson (Barry Richardson), David Stephenson (Angie Stephenson), and her grandchildren Jonathan McLamb, Cullen McLamb, and Tory Stephenson.
Jane was an only child, though she was very close to her cousin Judy Crouch, as well as cousins Doug, Robert, and Tyndall Baucom. Her dearest and longest friend, Jackie Burleson, was like a sister to her. She was proud of her heritage and celebrated her mountain life, returning to Banner Elk for months at a time throughout her years.
She attended Lees McCrae College and Appalachian State University for a degree in business and received a master’s degree from UNC Greensboro. She moved to Lexington, KY, with John in 1966, later attending the University of Kentucky for a degree in higher education administration. Jane had a lifelong love of learning and curiosity, always engaging with others to learn more about them and the world around her, even in her last days of life.
Jane and John moved to Berea in 1984, when John became the president of Berea College. Inspired by a phone call from Gurney Norman, who was seeking assistance for a friend, Jane began to design an updated version of a previous Berea College outreach program. In 1986, within months of Gurney’s phone call, Jane had secured funding and a group of committed board members to create the New Opportunity School for Women. This innovative school brought rural Appalachian women to Berea’s campus for a three-week intensive program to gain work experience, create resumes, learn computer skills, obtain dental care and medical screenings, and, most importantly, to tell their life stories and connect with other women with similar lived experiences. Many of the graduates went on to earn their GED and a college degree, inspiring their children to go to college as well.
Over the course of 40 years, Jane raised money to expand the program to locations in four states and established the NOSW Foundation to assist with expansion and funding of the programs. As of 2026, nearly 1,200 women have benefited from the program and improved their health and self-esteem, furthered their education, and developed a life path for themselves and their children.
One of her proudest moments was winning Oprah’s Angel “Use Your Life” Award from Oprah Winfrey, which granted the NOSW $100,000 in 2003. In addition to this award, she received the AARP “Create the Good Award,” the Kentucky Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Martha Layne Collins Leadership Award, and numerous others. Jane was also featured in People Magazine and appeared on The John Walsh Show.
Jane authored several books about the women who attended her program and the story of the program itself, “Courageous Paths: The Stories of Nine Appalachian Women”; “Dear to My Heart: The Story of the New Opportunity School for Women”; “I am Not a Nobody”; and “Changing Lives in Appalachia”. Adapted and produced as a stage play, “Courageous Paths” was performed in seven locations. Jane was also featured in several books such as “Kentucky Women” and “Kentucky’s Everyday Heroes”.
Jane served as Appalachian Director of The Steele-Reese Foundation from 1997 to 2007, continuing her commitment to the Appalachian region. She supported applicants for grants made by Steele-Reese in the Appalachian parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina. She was a strong advocate for women’s, children’s, and rural health issues.
In recognition of her contributions to education, Jane was bestowed honorary degrees from Berea College, Eastern Kentucky University and Lees-McRae College. As an alumnae of Lees-McRae, Jane was a dedicated member of the Board of Trustees, including serving as Chair. She was on the boards of the Jesse Stuart Foundation, Berea Hospital, and the Encyclopedia of Appalachia. She was also proud of her work as Commissioner for both the Kentucky Commission on Women and the Kentucky Appalachian Commission. In recent years, she continued to participate in the local Philanthropic Educational Organization and her book club. She loved spending time with friends and family, and her sense of humor was appreciated by everyone she touched, even in her final days.
Jane’s talents were many. She had a deep love for music and shared her talents for years as a piano teacher and organist for Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church. Jane and John loved shape-note singing and were involved in the creation of the Appalachian Association of Sacred Harp Singers in 1980. The group drew singers from Lexington and Berea and was supported by the Appalachian Center at the University of Kentucky from 1979 until John left his role at the center in 1984 to become president of Berea College. Jane also loved to knit and visited yarn shops everywhere she traveled with friends and family. She donated her beautiful pieces for fundraisers and gave many as gifts to lucky recipients. As her grandson Cullen wrote when he was five, “When the world gets crazy, my grandma likes to sit and knit.”
She attended Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon for several years. Her celebration of life service will be at Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Kentucky, on June 27, 2026. Visitation will start at 9:30 am. The service will be at 11:00 am, and a reception at noon. The service will be streamed through the Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church website. Dr. Geneva Matlock ’48

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – Geneva (Metzler) Matlock, born in Paducah, Kentucky, Jan. 10, 1925, passed away at her home in San Clemente, California, of complications from a stroke. She was 101.
In 1956, Geneva was one of four females and 100 males entering the University of Louisville or UofL Health School of Medicine. Three years later, she was one of three females and 80 males who graduated.
With her senior year at Paducah’s Heath High School cut short due to teachers being drafted for World War II and the government purchasing the property of many families in her community in order to build a TNT-production site, Geneva entered Berea College at age 17. A year later, she married Melvin Matlock, her high school sweetheart.
Geneva worked for the McCracken County Board of Education and Melvin worked for the Illinois Central Railroad, and both shared the dream of medical school.
To accomplish this goal, Geneva and her husband built and operated the Matlock laundry and dry-cleaning business, the first coin-operated laundromat in Paducah, before heading to medical school. Business thrived with the construction of a new gaseous diffusion plant.
Geneva and Melvin were anesthesiology interns in Battle Creek, Michigan, 1960-61. Geneva embarked on a highly fulfilling 25-year career in Utah and Southern California.
Her second marriage, to John Dayhuff, John E. Colonel USAFR, ended when he passed July 27, 2006.
She had macular degeneration, which had left her mother, Elizabeth Metzler, blind for her last years of life. She was a generous benefactor to stem cell research at UofL Health’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS), the University of California Irvine’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, and also Berea College.
She is survived by nieces Katya Fairbanks of Claremont, Connie Fairbanks, of Ithica, New York, Gretchen Durkin of Seattle, Washington; and her nephew Fritz Elmendorf, of Nosara, Costa Rica; as well as her companion and self-described ‘boy toy’, Ron Ford.

Sara Rebecca Anderson Barr was born on Thursday, June 13, 1929 in Johnson City, Tennessee, daughter of Thomas Bruce Anderson and Laura Celestine Akard Anderson. Her parents raised her on the Anderson farm, some two hundred acres near Kingsport that spanned the bottomland of Reedy Creek, woodland of Orebank, and the short hills near Bancroft Chapel. She often reflected on the joy and formation that roaming these spaces and beyond provided, turning her into a free-range kid on foot, horseback, and bicycle. As an only child, she formed bonds with cousins, aunts, and uncles that more than substituted for siblings. Childhood friendships developed into lifelong ones, and new friends emerged throughout her life. Many of these folks visited or called while she was in hospice, and in every case the conversation lifted her spirits and sustained her.Sara attended Orebank School and graduated from Blountville High School in 1947. In her senior year she served as executive editor of the school yearbook, and the Class Poem she wrote for it both conveys her character and also speaks across time to the reader in 2026. She attended Berea College, majored in biology, and graduated in the class of 1951. During the mid-1950s, she worked various jobs, including driving a bookmobile in Frankfurt, Kentucky, working in Washington, DC for a precursor office to the Environmental Protection Agency, and serving on the clerical staff of Tennessee Eastman Company.Through her high school friend Pauline (Frances) Barr, Sara knew Pauline s brother Harold, and in 1957 she and Harold Barr were married. They settled on his family s land near Blountville and together they operated the farm and raised their four children. While Harold taught in the Sullivan County Schools, Sara served as the de facto farm administrator. She kept careful records of such data as the prices cattle brought at market and the numbers of quarts of green beans she canned in the summers. She was hands-on with work ranging from hefting bales onto a hay wagon to dressing and plucking chickens to turning fruit into preserves. Along with Harold, she was a deeply devoted parent, instilling in her children kindness, curiosity, clarity of communication, and a moral compass. An adventurous and prolific cook, she made dishes as varied as sukiyaki (learned from her Aunt Martha Akard, a missionary in Japan for many years), bagels, and hummingbird cake. In addition, her homemade bread was a favorite among family and friends. Along with her devotion as a spouse, responsibilities as home and farm manager, and child rearer, Sara was for several years the in-home caregiver for her own mother.She was a lifelong and intrepid reader, her tastes running the gamut from mystery novels to medical textbooks to Appalachian lore. She was also a prolific note- and letter-writer always one to send a thank-you for a gift or a follow-up to a stop-in. An envelope addressed in her sure hand was an invitation to open and read. In more recent years, she became facile with her smart phone and enjoyed corresponding with both text and photos.After their nest was empty, she volunteered for several years at Holston Valley Medical Center Blood Bank. With Harold, as members of the Mount Rogers Appalachian Trail Club, they helped clear brush from and maintain the stretch of the AT near Damascus. Together she and Harold participated in square dancing. To visit children and relatives, they traveled to places around the US Washington state, Alabama, Tennessee, New York, Colorado, South Carolina, and Florida and they enjoyed such excursions as a trans-Canadian rail trip and a journey across Scotland.A person of deep faith, she exemplified it in ways ranging from small acts of kindness a soda for those working on the farm or a thank-you note for a visit to the largest of commitments and sacrifice to raise children and care for her mother and, later her husband, in long periods of need. She was a lifelong student of the Bible, a member of Reedy Creek Presbyterian and later Blountville Presbyterian Churches, and a part of fellowship focused on Old and New Testaments. For a time she was a member of an only-child Sunday school class, and for several years was part of Bible Study Fellowship along with friends. Not one often to pray aloud, when she gave a meal blessing, it always contained the phrase, we thank thee for friends and for tasks one that sums up her gratitude for the love of friends and the challenge and satisfaction of work.Sara died at home on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 and is predeceased by her husband of sixty-one years, Harold. She is survived by her children Andrew (Hillary) of Seattle, Washington, William (Amy Lee) of Birmingham, Alabama, Margaret of Blountville, Tennessee, and Thomas (Kathryn) of Providence, Rhode Island; and grandchildren Griffin Barr, Sydney Barr, Clarence Barr IV, Virginia Barr, Mary Margaret Barr (Nathan), James Myers, Samuel Myers, Thomas A. Barr (Marika), Elizabeth Barr (Matthew), and Rebecca Barr (Zachary).The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Blountville Presbyterian Church. James Price Stephenson ’55

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Price Stephenson, 92, of Amherst, NY on April 7, 2026. He passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Jim was born on October 28th,1933 in Angola, NY the son of Price and Kate Stephenson. He was known for his gentle, quiet nature and wry sense of humor. Jim served in the US Army post WWII and traveled extensively through Europe. Jim married Karen Krull in Angola, NY on April 3, 1961. They recently celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary. Jim spent his entire career with the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1998, but his true passions were classical music, camping and woodworking. Jim began studying the violin at age 5, graduating from Berea College in Kentucky with a major in music. He filled his home with music, learning the viola to form a string quartet with his children, and playing with the Amherst Symphony for many years, retiring in 2014 as their concert master. Both Jim and his wife, Karen were Buffalo Philharmonic subscriber for decades. Summer family camping trips were an annual tradition as the family made trips to canoe in the Adirondak mountains, Kentucky, Interlocken, MI, Algonquin Park and Cape Cod. Jim spent many hours building fine furniture in his basement – making a cradle for his grandchildren and replacing kitchen cabinets with his custom millwork. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Price and Kate Stephenson and sister, Alma Taylor. Jim is survived by his wife Karen and children Martin Stephenson (Despina), Melinda Stephenson (Matthew Turley), Mary Terry (David) and grandchildren Price Nicholas Ohmer and Sophia Thekea Stephenson. Charles Lewis Morris ’53

Charles (Charlie) Lewis Morris, 95, of Mt. Vernon, IL, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on 26 April 2026. His oldest son Lee was at his side when he passed. Charlie began his earthly journey on 14 February 1931 in Asheville, NC. He grew up on a dairy farm in West Asheville, was a popular student-athlete in high school and an avid baseball player, attended Berea College in eastern Kentucky for one year (a school for Appalachian youth that was always close to his heart), and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Charlie earned promotion to Tech Sergeant in four years and then served as an Air Force reserve officer for twenty years, retiring as a Major in 1972.
Charlie married the love of his life, Eloise, in February 1955. Together they moved to Waco, Texas where Charlie worked for General Tire as the personnel manager and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in economics at Baylor University. After a one-year stint at a General plant in Charlotte, NC, he and his young family moved to Illinois in 1972. Charlie was the executive who recommended Mt. Vernon as the site for the newest General Tire (later Continental) tire manufacturing plant. As personnel manager, over the years he interviewed thousands of new employees hired at the factory. Later, for a period of ten years, he served as the training manager at Inland Steel Coal Mine in Sesser, Illinois, before returning to General Tire as training manager where he retired in 1994.
Charlie was a wonderful Christian, husband, father, and friend. He served for decades as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Park Avenue Baptist Church, acted in retirement as Executive Director of SIMPACT, Inc. (a local business association of specialty trade contractors), was active in the Mt. Vernon Rotary Club, served as the local United Way chairman, and was a long-time member of the city’s Chowder Dinner Club. Charlie was a man of deep faith, sterling integrity, and a strong work ethic. He blended common sense and compassion, quickly befriending everyone he met. He loved Mt. Vernon, his home for more than five decades, and the many wonderful, life-long friends he made here. Charlie enjoyed playing golf, watching sports (especially his beloved Baylor Bears football and basketball teams), cultivating his garden, and tinkering with all things mechanical. He proudly watched his two sons develop professionally as a geologist and Marine, respectively. And he was especially happy to watch his grandson grow into a fine young man and accountant. Above all, Charlie cherished and served his wife of 71 years, Eloise. It is hard to imagine them apart.
He is survived by his wife Eloise Marshbanks Morris (94); oldest son Charles Lee Morris, of Scottsdale, AZ, and wife Donna; youngest son Michael Fred Morris, of Stafford, VA, and wife Sue; grandson Garrett Lewis Morris, of Salt Lake City, UT; and a host of special friends. Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Marion Morris; mother, Oneva Hayes Morris; stepmother, Irene Harkins Morris, and sister, Ruth Morris.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, 5 May 2026 at 11 AM at Park Avenue Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at noon in the church with Pastor Gary West officiating. Immediately following the funeral there will be an interment service at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made in Charlie’s honor to the “Charles L. Morris Endowed Scholarship” at Berea College (Berea College, PO Box 1855, Berea, KY 40403) or to Park Avenue Baptist Church (900 Park Avenue, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864).

Reverend Doctor Delmas E. Hare of Fletcher, NC passed away on April 14th. He was 92 years of age. Dr. Hare, born in Cullman, Alabama, was a graduate of Berea College (Berea, KY), The University of the South School of Theology (Sewannee, TN), & Emory University (Atlanta, GA). Before retiring and moving to Fletcher, Dr. Hare was employed by Fulton County Schools as an Honors Literature Teacher at Westlake High School. He was also an active member of the Episcopal church, holding various leadership roles since 1961. Delmas is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mabel, sister Annette Ellenburg, daughter Rebecca Lehman (Scott), sons David (Ann) and Clifford Hare, 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, along with nieces, nephews and sisters in law. A remembrance service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Food Pantry at St. Johns Episcopal Church in his honor. Robert “Bob” Edwin Bryan, 91, widower of Joyce Grogan Bryan, passed away Friday, February 20, 2026. Bob was born in Candler, NC to the late Dewey and Vivian Price Bryan on March 3, 1934. He graduated from Berea College in 1956 where he met Joyce, his beloved wife of 67 years. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC and they later settled in Frankfort to raise their family. Bob worked as an accountant for most of his career and retired from Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority. He was a member of South Frankfort Presbyterian Church.
Bob was a very charitable man and caregiver to many over his lifetime. He was a kind, witty, gentle man who cherished his family and was loved by everyone who crossed his path. Bob was lovingly known as “Pap” to his grandchildren, their friends, and others as well. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed watching and supporting them in all their activities. Bob liked traveling, watching sports, gardening, spending time outside, reading, and working puzzles. He was blessed to have been lovingly cared for by several special individuals in recent months.
He is survived by daughters, Rachel Cox (Keith) and Kristi Hammons (Tim); brother, Norman Bryan (Ginger); sister-in-law, Aldeva Bryan; grandchildren, Bryan Cox (Erin), Lindsey Cox, Trevor Hammons, and Gregory Hammons; great grandchildren, Elijah Hammons and Conner Bridges; and his precious spoiled cat, Tanna.
In addition to his wife and parents, Bob was preceded in death by one brother, Doyce Bryan; and sister, Ruth Bryan Cooper.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Clark Legacy Center, 3000 Versailles Road, Frankfort, KY 40601. Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 11:00am until the time of service on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Clark Legacy Center, Versailles Rd. Betty Carol (nee: Kincaid) Fisher, 90, of South Lebanon, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 4, 2026. Born on January 20, 1935 to Earl and Bernice (nee: Thorpe) Kincaid in Tallega, KY, Betty retired after many years of teaching. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. She loved her dog and the many dogs she had throughout her lifetime. Preceded in death by her husband, Joshua Calvin Fisher, one son, Walter Fisher and two sisters, Wanda Lee and Shirley Cook. Mrs. Eleanor Gail McDavid McCutchen Smith, age 89, and a resident of Martin, TN, passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2026, at West Tennessee Volunteer Hospital in Martin, TN. She was born on May 4, 1936, in Willard, KY, to the late Daniel Watt McDavid and Beatrice Clark Robinson. Known by many as “Miss Gail,” Mrs. Smith was a longtime second-grade teacher at Martin Elementary and Martin Primary schools, an active member of the Martin First United Methodist Church and the Laura Wells Circle at Martin FUMC, an active member of the 20th Century Club of Martin, and an inactive member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (for teachers) and the Weakley County Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Smith has been a resident of Weakley County since 1964. She was the valedictorian of the 1953 class of Hitchins (KY) High School and graduated from Berea College in Berea, KY, in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in Education. Years later, she obtained a master’s degree in Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She enjoyed cross-stitching, flowers, reading, and especially loved watching football and basketball, including the University of Tennessee, University of Kentucky, and Martin Westview sports.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 37 years, Robert G. “Bob” Smith of Martin, TN; one daughter, Tomi (George Pasley) McCutchen of Martin, TN; one son, Shawn (Carol) McCutchen of Avondale, PA; one stepson, Greg (Liz) Smith of Little Rock, AR; four grandchildren, Jesse (Cassidy) Parrish of Bradyville, TN, Michael (Kayla) McCutchen of Nashville, TN, Matthew (Megan) McCutchen of Madison, WI, and Stuart McCutchen of Dallas, TX; three step-grandchildren, Brandon (Rebecca) Smith, Taylor (Parker) McMillan, and Chad (Taryn) Smith; two great-grandchildren, Isaac McCutchen of Nashville, TN, and Xailee Parrish of Bradyville, TN; eight step-great-grandchildren; one niece, Julie (Herbie) Jackson of Grayson, KY; one nephew, Jim Robinson of Grayson, KY; three brothers, Morris (Loma) Robinson of Grayson, KY, Jack Clark Robinson of Santa Barbara, CA, and William “Bill” Robinson of Catlettsburg, KY.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her stepfather, Ernest Robinson; one stepson, Scott Smith; one sister-in-law, Sandy Robinson; and two half-brothers.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Martin First United Methodist Church, and on Saturday, March 28, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Martin.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Martin at 11:00 a.m.

Florence Bess Harner, affectionately known as Flo, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, in Xenia, Ohio, at the age of 90. Born on October 24, 1935, in Midkiff, West Virginia, she graced this world with her vibrant spirit and loving heart for nearly a century, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate within the hearts of her family, friends, and students.
Flo’s journey in education began at her alma mater, Guyan Valley High School, where her passion for music blossomed. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music education from Berea College in 1959, she moved to Xenia, Ohio, in 1961 alongside her best friend, Betty Childers-Triplett, after her time spent teaching at Guyan Valley High School. Over the next 29.5 years, she dedicated her life to shaping the minds and hearts of countless students at Guyan Valley High School (1959-1961), Cedarville High Schools (1961-1963) and Xenia Community Schools (1963-1990), inspiring them not only with her musical talents but also with her love and kindness.
Her dedication to music and teaching was matched only by her devotion to her family. Flo was a loving wife to her late husband Joseph “Joe” Harner, with whom she shared 52 wonderful years of marriage (married August 13, 1966). Together, they created a nurturing home filled with laughter and support. She was also a proud mother to her daughter, Lisa Trent, who preceded her in death, and was a cherished mother-in-law to Gary Trent. Her grandson, AJ Trent, was a source of great joy for her, and she treasured every moment spent with him.
Flo’s personality was a beautiful blend of humor, patience, and generosity. She had an infectious ability to bring laughter to any gathering, and her kindness knew no bounds—she would quite literally give you the shirt off her back. Known to her family as one of the most patient people they ever knew, she shared her unwavering faith in God and her love for her church, singing, solos, duets and with the choir for nearly 60 years. Flo enjoyed her hobbies, which included playing piano, reading, and going on trips with Joe. Each activity was another opportunity for her to connect and create lasting memories with her loved ones.
She was proud of her accomplishments, particularly the deep bonds she formed with her family and the impact she made on the lives of her students throughout her career. Gary recalls the endearing moments spent with his beloved mother-in-law, expressing that he always knew he was in trouble when she affectionately called him “SA.”
Flo is reunited in heaven with her devoted husband Joe, her beloved daughter Lisa, her parents Algie and Ruby Davis, and her siblings—Lucille, John, Civa, Beulah, Kate, Herb, Tom, Abb, Bert, Jim, Ruth, and Edith—who have all gone before her. While her physical presence will be dearly missed, her spirit will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Public visitation to be held at Faith Community Methodist Church in Xenia, Ohio on Friday April 10, 2026 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. On Saturday April 11, 2026 public visitation to be held at the same church at 10:00 am with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 am. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Joe at Woodland Cemetery in Xenia, Ohio in a private ceremony.

Sue Troutman Henry, in her 88th year, has entered into the eternal presence of the Lord Jesus Christ whom she loved and served. Sunrise for this woman of God was February 9, 1938 in McLean County, nestled in beautiful Western Kentucky. Her parents were Rollie A. Troutman and Willie King Troutman who were waiting to welcome her home in Heaven. The Troutman family included thirteen children. Sue’s siblings were Rollie King (deceased), Ann (deceased), Kelly, Carrol, Malcom (deceased), Marshall, Joe, Willie, (deceased), Nell (Mrs. Frank Weer), Clay, Jayne (Mrs. Dan Johnson), and Eugene (deceased). Sunset for this woman of faith was in her home in Lynchburg, Virginia on Friday, April 3, 2026 at 2:55 pm surrounded by family and friends. God was so gracious in His timing to call Sue home to see her Lord and Savior on a Good Friday. “Precious in the Sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints” (Psalm 116:15). “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord: (2 Corinthians 5:8). These two Scriptures that she and Dr. Henry have shared with hundreds during their seventy-three years ministry.
Sue was married on April 18, 1957 to Dr. James Gordan Henry at Calvary Baptist Church, Somerset, Kentucky. She is survived by her husband of sixty-eight years and eleven months. The Henrys have three children who were affectionately called “the 3Ms:” Mona Thomas (Lynchburg, VA), Mark Alan (Lebanon, TN), Melody Henry (Lynchburg, VA); six grandchildren: William Edward “Beau” Ware III, Jeanne Ware Pribble, Emilee Bradshaw Fulcher, Kimberlee Bradshaw, Wendy Henry Goodner, James Alan Henry; eleven great grandchildren: Caleb Roach, Lillian Goodner, Maggie Pribble, Willow Ware, William Edward “Stone” Ware IV, Emma Fulcher, Jackson & Nashan Salem Elizabeth James “Ellie” Henry, Livingston “Vivie” Henry and Josie Henry.
Sue was a graduate of Calhoun High School (KY), the Berea College of Nursing, and Middle Tennessee State University (B.S.-Psychology). She served as Registrar at the Northeastern Bible College (NJ). Her nursing career, which covered over forty years, was at all levels of nursing including staff, supervisory, management, and administrative positions, the most recent at the Middle Tennessee Medical Center, Murfreesboro, Tennessee where the Henrys lived for nineteen years. There Sue taught a women’s Sunday school class at Southeast Baptist Church many years. For seven years, she did summer missionary work with the Sioux Indians at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (South Dakota) teaching women’s Bible classes and preparing correspondence lessons as follow-up. The church elected her to serve on a Pastor’s Search Committee. For eight years, she organized a women’s retreat at the Peaks of Otter in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Upon their relocation to Lynchburg in 2002, the Henrys became members of the Forest Baptist Church for fourteen years. Due to her declining health their membership was transferred to Beulah Baptist Church near their home. Dr. Henry continued his worldwide prayer seminar ministry (averaging 52 prayer seminars annually from 1984 to 2013) while Sue became actively involved in the local church. She was asked by the pastor to establish a women’s ministry, a library and a prayer ministry. She served on the Tellers’ Committee for many years, taught in Vacation Bible School, and worked in the nursery Sunday evenings. She was an active member of the Disaster Relief Team traveling as far away Louisiana when Katrina struck. She served on the Pastoral Search Committee for Forest Baptist Church.
Sue’s passion was missions. She used vacation time from MTMC to accompany her husband on trips to many nations always speaking to women’s groups. She ministered in forty nations. Her most recent involvement was with The Southern Cross Project – SBC (distributing bibles to Chinese tourists) in Thailand, Taiwan, and Macau. She ministered in Nagasaki, Japan. She developed a wide network of correspondence with missionaries in many nations not only providing much needed contact with home but seriously receiving prayer requests and providing prayer support. She has served as the liaison person for many of the missionaries, receiving their letters, duplicating them, and mailing them to their family, friends, and supporters. The same is true of nationals in many nations. She is known as “Mama Sue” in many nations. She has developed friendships that have endured the test of time; many called her “best friend.” A favorite event has the annual Troutman Family Gathering in her beloved Kentucky. Both she and Dr. Henry have been commissioned “Kentucky Colonels”.
The family will receive friends at Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory,427 Graves Mill Road, on Friday, April 10, 2026, beginning at 1 p.m. The Memorial Service will begin at 2 p.m. Dr. Tyler Scarlett of Forest Baptist Church will officiate and bring a life changing message from the Word of God. There will be special music and comments from Pastor Foster Covington, who hosted a number of prayer seminars in England and Jeanne Pribble. Interment will follow at the Beulah Church Cemetery on Leesville Road, Lynchburg, VA.

Betty Lois Smathers Amburgey, age 87, of Mallie, KY, passed away on March 22, 2026. Betty was born on October 23, 1938, in Canton, NC to Alden Smathers and Rubye Smathers Smith. She graduated from Canton High School and went on to attend Berea College, where she met Jesse Lee Amburgey, her husband of 50 years. She and Jesse both embodied Berea’s belief that education can transform lives.
Betty later earned her degree from Morehead State University. She continued her education at the University of Kentucky, where she earned a Doctorate in Education. Her love of learning led her to a lifelong career in education. She taught at both Carr Creek Elementary and Carr Creek High School in Knott County, KY. She later moved to Versailles, KY, where she became a university professor and department chair. Even after retiring, she remained dedicated to education by volunteering in adult literacy programs in her community.
Growing up in rural Appalachia, Betty and Jesse were passionate advocates for their region and dedicated supporters of Community Action Agencies and retired back to Mallie, KY, to be closer to their eldest grandchildren. Betty was passionate about both travel and her family. She cherished family traditions including beach vacations, horse races, basketball tournaments and hosting Memorial Day gatherings. Her travels took her as far as Sydney, Australia, where she welcomed the birth of her twin grandchildren – and then took on the less desirable job of having them as her traveling companions on the return flight to the U.S. Her travels failed to refine her palate as she was known for traveling with a box of wine and a pack of saltines.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jesse Lee Amburgey; her brother, Dean Smathers; and her grandson, Eli Capps-Amburgey. Betty is survived by her husband, Jerry Raxter, her high school sweetheart with whom she reconnected and shared an eleven-year marriage. She is also survived by her three children: Greg Amburgey (Lynda) of Mallie, KY; Jeff Amburgey (Cathy) of Clendenin, WV; and LeAngela (Mike) Alread of Hilton Head, SC.
She is further survived by four grandchildren, Justin Amburgey (Chanda), Jessica Amburgey (Tom Shaw), Sydney Dennis and Austin Dennis (Madeline); and five great-grandchildren, Jaden, Jed, Dalis, Bristol, and Max Amburgey. She is additionally survived by her sister, Johnnie Sue Bailey (Ray); her sister-in-law, Helena Smathers; and her granddaughter-in-law, Mandi Amburgey. “Favorite Aunt Betty” also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, including Marqueta Patten, who remained a close friend throughout her life and visited her daily. Betty was a member of both Woodford Christian Church and Smithsboro Baptist Church. Visitation will be held March 26th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Hindman Funeral Home, followed by a Celebration of Life at 6:00 PM. Martha Hawkins ’60

Martha Louise Hawkins (née Moore), aged 87, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2026, in Lenox, Massachusetts. Born on April 4, 1938, in Jackson County, North Carolina, Martha lived a life marked by kindness, resilience, and an unwavering love for her family.
Martha grew up in North Carolina and graduated from Cullowhee High School in 1955. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1960 from Berea College in Kentucky, where she met her husband, Rupert Samuel Hawkins. Martha and Sam were married in 1960 and lived in Tallahassee, Florida, before moving to Bedford, Massachusetts, where they settled and raised a family.
Martha was a public health nurse in Appalachia, and later the head nurse of the surgical daycare unit at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts. She was also a nursing supervisor at the Carlton-Willard Village, a retirement community in Bedford. Her career as a nurse reflected her compassionate nature and commitment to helping others.
She taught Sunday school at the First Baptist Church in Bedford and later became an active member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, UCC, before moving to Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Those who knew her always remarked on her pleasant demeanor, friendliness, and sense of humor. She possessed an innate gift for connection, was instantly likable, easy to get to know, generous with wise counsel, and always ready to share a laugh.
Martha was a loving sister to her two siblings, Annette and Charles, and the proud mother of three children, David, Michael, and Susan. She cherished her role as a grandmother to Jacob, Jackson, Charles, Emily, Annika, Ashley, and Bethany. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she found immense joy in their accomplishments and presence.
Martha’s legacy is one of connection, warmth, and shared laughter. Her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Carol Bennette ’61

Carol Marlene Greene Bennette, 86, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2026 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. Carol was born on April 24, 1939 in Beckley, WV, to the late John Henry Greene and Emma Kathleen Ellis Greene. She was a devoted wife to Robert “Bob” Bruce Bennette for 61 years before his passing in November 2021.
Carol is survived by her two daughters: Darla Sprague (husband Jeff Sprague) of Kernersville, NC; and Marla Hurley (husband Glen Hurley) of Whitsett, NC; and three grandsons: Austin Sprague and Caleb Sprague of Kernersville, NC; and Wesley Hurley of Fayetteville, NC. She is also survived by her precious sister, Shirley Ulaki of Creamery, WV; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and by two brothers: James Ellis Greene and Harold Blaine Greene.
Carol was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, WV, earning the honor of valedictorian. She attended Berea College in Berea, KY, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and also marrying Bob on graduation day. They settled in Indianapolis, IN and she went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Education from Butler University. Upon moving to NC, she worked as a dedicated teacher and then as a Guidance Counselor with Guilford County School System, retiring after many years of service to her students. It was commonplace for her to be recognized by her former students with a hearty “Hey, Mrs. Bennette!!”
Carol and Bob enjoyed living in the Gibsonville community, and raising their girls there. They were both members of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church, and served in a variety of roles within the congregation. She was a woman of many talents: she and her sister, with the help from their children and reluctant husbands, built a house (yes, house) in WV. She loved shopping and hunting treasures to outfit the homes she built. She equally loved the beach, and enjoyed many trips over the years to the house in Shallotte Point, NC. Gibsonville may have been home base, but these other two places restored her soul.
An avid reader, she often swapped books with friends and family. She loved watching ballgames with Marla and Darla – March Madness was a special event every year, often staying up well-past bedtimes, and loved college football games in the fall. (Go WV Mountaineers!) She and Bob were also racing fans, and traveled to several racetracks in their RV. Her love of Tony Stewart was contagious. She was also active in the Motor Racing Outreach program, handing out devotions and Bibles or serving up refreshments. Carol also loved animals – she was a dedicated “Mom” to countless strays and rescuing others.
A memorial service will be held at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel on March 5, 2026 at 2:00 pm. Visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations or memorials be made to any local animal shelter or rescue organization, local library, or breast cancer care program.
The family would also like to extend our sincerest and deepest appreciation to the staff at ARMC, especially Debi, Chris (ICU nurses) and Crystal (Palliative Care), Guilford County EMS, and the volunteers at Fire Station 28 for the care of our mother during this time.

Dr. B. Kenneth Ken Roper peacefully entered into rest on February 18, 2026, at his home. He was born on March 23, 1938, in Atco, Georgia. Ken is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Mary Allen Adams Roper. He was predeceased by his parents, Lucille Henry Roper and Eczell Cornelison Roper, and by his brother, Rodney J. Roper of Jasper, GA. Ken graduated from Pickens County High School in Jasper, GA; Berea College in Berea, KY; the University Hospital School of Medical Technology; and the Medical College of Georgia Graduate School, where he earned both an M.S. and a Ph.D. in endocrinology. He retired as Assistant Director of the Clinical Laboratory at the VA Medical Center, Manager of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department, and an Inspector for the College of American Pathologists Accreditation Program. Ken also held academic appointments at the Medical College of Georgia as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Technology in the School of Allied Health Sciences. Ken was a member of the American Society of Medical Technologists and the American Society of Clinical Chemistry. He was also a member of the Augusta Country Club, the Morris Museum of Art, Historic Augusta, and was a Master Gardener. A dedicated member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Ken served on the Vestry, the Usher Committee, and in the Recorder Consort. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons: Kenneth Merrell Roper and Henry Allen Roper (Jenny) of Augusta, GA; his brother, Donald E. Roper (Janice) of Jasper, GA; and his grandchildren, Jackson Bolling Roper of Atlanta, and Grady McGarrah Roper of Augusta. Ken will be remembered for his quiet strength and his kind, gentle heart. He made our lives better simply by being present. We will forever miss him. The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Trinity Hospice especially Delinda, Autumn, Tia, and Cynthia as well as to Jenies, a private nurse who provided invaluable support during her short time with them. A service celebrating Ken’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 22, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, with the Reverend Dr. Bunny Simon Williams and the Reverend Dr. Talmadge Joe Bowden officiating. Burial will follow in the Ash Garden on the church grounds. Wayne H. Standifer, 87, a resident of Cleveland, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 14, 2026. He was born on March 13, 1939, to Herbert and Hattie Standifer in Lynch, Kentucky. Wayne was the youngest of eight children. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by the wife he loved so dearly, Dr. Betty Robbins Standifer, by three sisters: Rae Standifer Black, Margaret Standifer Gilbert, and Joyce Standifer Monhollen, by three brothers: Gene Standifer, Fred W. Standifer, and Edward Benton Standifer, and by six nieces and nephews. Wayne leaves behind to cherish his memory one brother, Carson Leon Standifer of Tacoma, Washington; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Janette Standifer (Chattanooga), Dr. Patricia (Virgil) Allen (Cleveland), and Eddie(Cathy) Robbins (Jasper, GA), twelve nieces and nephews, a host of greats , and three special friends, Ollie Lee(Ruth Ann) and Patricia Moses Lloyd, the second love of his life. Wayne graduated from Cumberland High School, (KY). After working in Louisville for a year, he enrolled at Berea College. He earned the BA in Elementary Education, 1962; an MS in Library Science at University of Kentucky, 1969; and the EdS in Library Education, 1969. Wayne s 51-year career in education included seven years in Harlan County (KY) schools, 1962-69; four years as technical services librarian at Lee College (Cleveland, TN) 1969-73; media specialist in Whitfield County (GA) schools, 1973-89; media specialist in Cherokee County and Douglas County schools, 1989-98. During his stint at Lee in the early seventies, Wayne met Betty Robbins in the library. They developed a friendship that led to marriage a few years later. After retiring from teaching in Georgia public schools in 1998, Wayne and Betty moved to Cleveland where he worked in the Lee University library for another 15 years. Wayne enjoyed travel and hiking. From his days at Berea College he was an avid mountain hiker. He hiked alone and with college friends in his youth. In their friendship/courtship years he and Betty both worked in Gatlinburg in the summer and they hiked Smoky Mountain trails. He discovered that a friend and fellow Berea alum, Ollie Lee, shared his love of trekking in the hills. They spent many hours hiking local area trails and visits to the Smokies. In their later years they ventured into trips to the Rocky Mountains and a trip to hike the Alps. Wayne committed his life to Christ at an early age. He and Betty were involved in spiritual service in the Church of God at the central level (Lee University, PTS and Chaplains Commission), as well as the congregations of Westmore, Mt. Paran(Atlanta) and City Church (Chattanooga). After retiring from Lee University in 2013, Wayne joined the Gideons and worked for the Lord as a faithful member of the Gideon South Camp for about ten years until his health began to fail. The Remembrance of Life service will be held at 1p.m. Thursday, March 19 at the North Ocoee Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Ollie Lee and Rev. Phillip Looney officiating. SINKS GROVE, WV – Rosa Lee Keeling, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at her home in Sinks Grove, WV. Born February 5, 1942, in Sinks Grove, WV, she was the daughter of the late Virgil Paris and Blanche Evelyn Bostic Kidd.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Keeling. She was the last of her siblings and was preceded in death by her brother, John Kidd; sister, Rita Carol Wikel; daughter, Sarah Keeling Burgess and son-in-law, Victor Burgess; sons, Alan Keeling and Dannie Keeling.
Survivors include her children, David Boyce and wife Charlene, Christopher S. Boyce and wife Ann, Kendra Meadows and husband David, Renee Mengert and husband Kenny, Larry Keeling, Rodger Keeling, and Linda Keeling; eleven grandchildren, Benjamin Boyce (Ruth), Joshua Boyce, Isaac Boyce, Gary Bert, Jon Bradley, Alexa Preston (Lucas), Kristi O’Dell (Derrick), Heather Mengert, Robbie Mengert, Alicia Hershelman (Chris), Daniel Cox (Nicole); 27 great grandchildren, Nicholas, Cindy, Leon (expected in August 2026), Chloe, Silas, Hailey, Monroe, Tanner, Carly, Zayne, Baylee, Emma, Walynn, Presley, Harley, Riley, Legend, Sage, Destin, Trinity, Sarah, Abby, Christopher, Taylor, Cooper, Lydia, and Brady. She is also survived by one aunt, Poochie, many nieces and nephews and special family, Amber, Arlene, and Brittany.
Rosa Lee was a 1960 graduate of Union High School. She graduated with a B.S. from San Jose State in 1966 and completed her Master’s Degree in Education in 1989. She was a retired teacher from Monroe County Schools. She loved teaching and continued to care deeply for the children she taught. Rosa Lee was well known for her faith. She dedicated her life to serving the Lord and sharing Jesus with anyone she met. She was a member of the Church of God in Union and Pickaway Methodist Church, where she also sang in the choir, served as a Lay Speaker, and was a part of several prayer groups and was known as “Prayer Warrior”. She loved her friends and was very proud of her family. She always liked to tell others about how much of a blessing her very large family was to her. Her hobbies included singing, art, poetry, and storytelling, all while making her Rosie’s Pies for the community. Additionally, she received her co-pilots license as a young adult and just recently finished writing a book about her life she hoped to have published one day. She loved roses and all things rosy. She enjoyed themed Christmases and a house full of her loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday, March 9, 2026, at the Union Church of God in Union, WV, with Pastor Mike Smith and Pastor Gene Fullen officiating. Burial will follow at the Beulah Land Cemetery on the family farm in Sinks Grove, WV. Visitation will be held from 11:00AM until time of services on Monday at the church.

Barbara J. Terrill, age 79, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Baptist Health in Richmond, KY. She was born on September 20th, 1946, in Pike County, KY to the late Albert and Rosie Potter Johnson. Barbara was a Berea College graduate and had taught business classes at both Fugazzi Business College and Eastern Kentucky University. She started her insurance career with Pennington Insurance Company, was a partner in the Economy Insurance Company, and retired from Linville Insurance Company.
Barbara’s sons were her life, and she was the biggest fan her kids, grandkids, and grandnieces had ever had to attend their games. She attended every sporting event they played, much to the chagrin of the officials and apposing fans. For many years she was the statistician for their teams, sporting events that her family participated in were her joy. She also enjoyed watching Family Feud and had an incredibly special friendship with her Berea College gang.
She was a loyal and committed member of Silver Creek Baptist Church, taking on roles as a Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school instructor, and treasurer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Johnson and Rita Exley, two brothers, Bud Potter, and Estill Johnson and two nephews, Joe Potter and Chris Wright.
Barbara is survived by two sons, Ronnie Terrill, II and his wife Gini and their son Trey and daughter Catie, Ricky Terrill and his wife Kellie and their daughter Jadeyn and son Jakob. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Cable, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and many friends.
Visitation for Barbara will be 4-8 PM Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Davis & Powell Funeral Home, with funeral services on Thursday, April 30, 2026, also at the funeral home, Reverends Dennis Hisle, and Jimmy Ashcraft officiating. John W. Preece – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend John W. Preece John W. Preece, 77, of Delbarton, WV, unexpectedly departed this life on December 16th, 2023 at Logan Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. John was born on May, 28, 1946 to the late Ada Mae Preece Farley and raised by the late Carl and Pearl Preece in his beloved hometown of Delbarton, WV. In 1964 John graduated from Burch High School. After graduating high school he attended Marshall University where he graduated with a BA in Accounting and a MA in Education. He was a Certified Public Accountant. He also had the distinction of being the Professor of Accounting (Tenured) at the South Williamson Community College in Williamson, West Virginia; and is the previous full-time Instructor at WV State (College) University. Before serving as Mayor of Delbarton, John worked for the State of West Virginia from 1969 to 1988, progressing through the ranks to Upper Management. In 1985, John opened his own Accounting Practice in Williamson, WV on a part-time basis. By 1988, his private practice was thriving and he made the choice to leave State Employment to run his Accounting Practice full time. John practiced as a Certified Public Accountant since 1985. Being the Mayor of Delbarton was John’s passion. He was Mayor from 1997-2019 then re-elected again in 2023. He loved his town and more importantly loved making it a place we can all call HOME. Some of his favorite projects he envisioned and had a big part in creating in Delbarton, were the construction of the park and walking track located by the Elk Creek Bridge, Helena Manor, the Opry House, Coal camp project, and the sewer treatment upgrades. His most passionate project as of late was the Burch High School Hall of Fame Alumni. He served on the board of the Mountaineer Development for over 20 years working to redevelop the town of Delbarton one project at a time. He sat on many advisory boards and was very proud to do so. To say he loved Delbarton with all his heart and soul would be accurate. John attended many Churches throughout his faithful walk with the Lord. He attended Full Gospel Lighthouse with his favorite cousin Jimmy Maynard as pastor. He also attended Regional Church of God with his long time friend Mitchell Bias as pastor. He also as of late attended Connolly Memorial Baptist with Brother Zeke Stepp as pastor. He was very proud of his deep faith and love for the Lord often quoting his favorite bible verse John 3:16. Every day you would find him in Prayer thanking the Lord for his many many Blessings. John is survived by his son John Bradley and his wife Susan Preece and son Braydan Preece both of Delbarton. His beloved grandsons John Bradley and Jacob Preece also of Delbarton. He was forever proud of his Children and grandchildren, always stating “they were the greatest accomplishments of his life”. He was preceded in death by brothers Homer Preece, Les Preece, Carl Preece Jr., and his sisters Maida Allen Klenner , Lucy Swain, and Allene Maynard. He is survived by siblings Roy C Allen Jr., Victoria Allen Scott, Melinda Allen Grimes and George W. Allen. Long time employee and assistant Angela Hamilton, Debbie Starr, Crystal Moore, Stephanie Runyon and Jo Mahon. Business partner and friend Kevin Morgan. A host of Nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, and employees he always considered family. His town council and dear friends as well. John was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous, loyal, and brave. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all of his life experiences. He will be remembered for all the heart he shared with his friends and family. He truly loved each of themand if you knew him, you knew it. When his time came, he carried himself with dignity, strength, and full of love for those who went before him. He will be missed dearly by all who knew him and never forgotten. Funeral services will be held at the Regional Church of God on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 1:00pm with Pastors Mitchell Bias and Jimmy Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in the Preece Cemetery at Delbarton. Visitation will be at the church Wednesday evening from 6:00pm till 10 pm. James Ernest “Ernie” Hillard, 77, of Berea, Kentucky, passed away on March 30, 2026, at St. Joseph Hospital-Berea.
Born on December 16, 1948, in Berea, Kentucky, Ernest was the son of the late Byron and Dale Hillard. A proud graduate of Berea College, he went on to earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Georgia State University. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for two years after being drafted during the Vietnam War era.
Following his military service, Ernest began his long entrepreneurial journey by operating a small convenience store in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his uncles. This experience launched a successful 50-year career as a serial entrepreneur. Together with his wife, Rita, whom he married on November 22, 1974, Ernest owned and operated multiple businesses, many of which became staples in the Berea area for decades. Some of his notable ventures included Middletown Mall, Middletown Industrial, Middletown Composites, and Middletown Metal Works. Ernest was a former member of the Central Bank Advisory Board for Madison County.
The couple shared 51 years of marriage and built a devoted family through their hard work and partnership. Ernest is survived by his loving wife, Rita Davis Hillard of Berea; two sons, James Byron “J.B.” Hillard of Lexington, KY and George Matthew “Matt” Hillard of Berea, KY; five grandchildren, Hannah (Blake) White of Eagle River, Alaska, Emma (Jordan) Hillard of Paris, Kentucky, Matthew Hillard and Logan Hillard of Berea, Kentucky, and Hudson Hillard of Lexington, Kentucky; two great-grandchildren, Frankie White and Drew White of Eagle River, Alaska; his
sisters, Tish Hillard, Susie Hillard, and Margaret (Charles) Zoellers, all of London, KY; his brothers-in-law, Jim (Patty) Davis and Rick (Linda) Davis, both of Berea, KY, Joe Schenkenfelder of London, KY, and his sister-in-law, Jan Bennet of Berea, KY; his special caregiver: Linda Hays; and many nieces and nephews who will also mourn his passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Dale Hillard, his sister, Carol Schenkenfelder, his brother-in-law, David Bennet, and his parents-in-law, Merle and George Davis, Jr. of Berea, KY.
Ernest will be remembered as a soft-spoken, kind, hard-working, and highly intelligent man.

James Michael Greene, “Jim”, 78, of Stokesdale, NC, passed away on March 10, 2026. He left this world at home, surrounded by those he adored – exactly where he belonged.
Jim was born in the mountains of western North Carolina, in Spruce Pine, into a family bound together by love and devotion. It was there he learned the values of faith, hard work, honesty, and an unshakeable commitment to family.
He met the love of his life, Joyce, during their college years at Berea college in Kentucky, and the two built a life together that spanned 56 years. Joyce, an RN, cared for him with extraordinary devotion through his declining health – a final chapter of a love story that never wavered.
Jim was exceptionally bright, and there was little he couldn’t figure out or fix with his own two hands. Together with Joyce, they built a home and a life from the ground up, tending to his property with pride until the very end.
Jim was a man of unwavering honesty, curiosity, and philosophical depth, who could sit with life’s bigger questions. He had a deep respect for all living things – his land, wildlife, and beloved pets. He served proudly on the Town of Stokesdale Planning Board. Alongside Joyce, he pioneered audio and video solutions for many churches across the region.
More than anything, Jim was a devoted father. His daughter Jennifer was one of the great loves of his life – and she, loved him more deeply than words can hold. In her husband Mike, he found the son he never had – a bond that meant the world to him. His grandchildren, Nora “Niko” and Bella, were his heart and soul – the people who lit him up most in this world.
Jim is survived by his wife Joyce Norris Greene of Stokesdale, NC, his daughter Jennifer Wooten (Mike), and his grandchildren Nora “Niko” and Bella, who will carry his integrity and boundless love for as long as they live. Jim also leaves behind his sister Mary Lou Woody (Marvin), along with nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family, and long time friends James Burgett, Carolyn and Tom O’Brien, Lewis Vannoy, and Debbie Owenby.
Preceding him in death are his mother Norine Greene, father David Greene, sister Elizabeth Jones (George), sister-in-law Mildred King (Bill), in-laws Gilbert and Virginia Norris, and many other loved ones.
A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Saturday, May 9th, 2026 at 1:00 PM – Shiloh Holiness Cogic, 200 E Vandalia Road, Greensboro, North Carolina 27406.

Mark Francis Boes, 71, of Berea, Kentucky, passed away on May 12, 2026. Mark was born on July 2, 1954. He loved the University of Kentucky Wildcats and model railroads. He could often be found with a Mountain Dew in his hand.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Orville Francis Boes and Anna Lee (Mayhew) Boes. Mark is survived by his sisters, Sheryl and Laura, and other members of his loving family.

Ginny Roller Fisler, 64, Kingsport, went to be with The Lord on Monday, March 9, 2026. Ginny was born May 29, 1962, to parents, Jim and Aileen Roller in Kingsport, TN. She was a 1979 graduate of Sullivan Central High School and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Berea College in 1983. Ginny worked for the US Post Office in Ft. Worth, TX and retired after 25 years of service. Ginny enjoyed traveling in her free time and especially loved visiting the beach.
Ginny was preceded in death by her father, James “Jim” Dean Roller and husband, Lloyd Fisler.
Those left to cherish her memory include her mother, Aileen Roller; aunt, Mary Etta Bowlin; cousins, Marvin Roller, Iris Rentz, Debbie Carver (Don), Tim Barnes (Beverly) and Becky Bowery; special neighbors, Dianne and Amanda Jobe.

Michael Peter Bobic, 62, of Fairmont, passed away on January 15, 2026 at West Virginia University Hospital. He was born March 22, 1963 in Binghamton, NY a son of the late Robert Joseph and Jane Blackmore Perry Bobic. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Jennifer L. Knotts Bobic. Michael was a professor of political science for over 30 years. He served at several institutions throughout his career including, Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA, West Virginia Wesleyan College, Glenville State, Alderson Broaddus and most recently Liberty University. He was a graduate of Appalachian Bible College, as well as Berea College in Kentucky, and then obtained his masters and doctorate from the University of Tennessee. Michael was a member of the Galilean Baptist Church in White Hall where he was a past deacon and also taught adult Sunday school classes. Michael enjoyed fencing for most of his life and had most recently coached the fencing classes at the YMCA in Clarksburg. He had enjoyed spelunking in his younger years. He was an original Star Trek fan, loved Godzilla Movies, revisiting them often throughout his life, and enjoyed a good mystery read. He was treated with dialysis for almost 40 years of his life and was a very compliant patient to treatment. It became important to him to advocate to other patients the importance to comply as well. Michael loved academic life. Having taught political science, it was important to him that the students learn to think for themselves, and to never know his true political viewpoint. His former students often stated, he was their favorite teacher because of his dedication to his students. Michael was a published author having written several papers as well as the book, With the People s Consent . He was a wonderful husband, great teacher and friend, and a Godly man. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother, Stephen Martin Bobic of Knoxville, TN, his sister, Katherine Jean Parton of Kingsport, TN, his in-laws, James N. and Margaret A. Hunter Knotts of Fairmont, his sisters-in-law, Melissa A. Knotts of Fairmont, Mary K. and her husband Richard Windon of Fairmont, and Amy S. and her husband Mark Lanham of Philippi, WV, and his honorary children, Carese and her husband Nathan Niezgoda of Fairmont and their daughter Aurora. In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Tim Parton. The family has entrusted the arrangements to Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont. In accordance with his wishes, cremation services will take place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 11A.M. at the Galilean Baptist Church, 79 Jaynes Drive, Fairmont, WV 26554. Geneva “Genny” Bryant, age 80, of Berea, Kentucky, passed away on April 25, 2026, in Richmond, Kentucky at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center. She was born on September 3, 1945, in Clark County, Kentucky, and lived a life marked by devotion to her family, her faith, her work, and the many simple joys she cherished.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Juanita Griggs Sharp; her husband, George Douglas Bryant; and three siblings, Barbara (Jack) Brogle, Arthur Lee “Bud” Sharp, and Richard Sharp. Her family was the center of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with those she loved.
She is survived by her two daughters, Genene Bryant and Georganna (Doug) Kirby; her grandchildren, Dalton Rogers, Kelsey (Mike) Jackson, and Levi Kirby; and her great-grandchildren, Harper and Wyatt Jackson. She also leaves behind her siblings, Wanda (Joe) Sampson and Gloria (Bobby) Tyler; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Sharp and Dinah Hall; and many nieces and nephews who will remember her with love and gratitude.
Genny retired from Berea College Utilities after many years of faithful service. She also worked for more than 10 years at Shannon Johnson Elementary as an aide, where she was appreciated for her kindness, patience, and steady presence.
She was an active member of Berea Church of God, where she volunteered and shared her time generously. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she found strength and comfort in her church family. Genny also enjoyed cheering for UK basketball, traveling to Pigeon Forge, shopping, and spending time with her family. These were among the many things that brought her happiness and reflected the warm, joyful spirit she shared with those around her.
Funeral services will be 2 pm, Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Lakes Funeral Home with Pastor Stephen Hobbs officiating. Burial will follow in the Robinson Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Bradley Tyler, Gammon Fain, Logan Allen, Steve King, and Daniel Anglin. Honorary bearers will be Monty Brock, Diana Hobbs, Doris Crase, Brenda Harris, Helen Eden, and Dr. Sarah Little.

Breanna Edwards, 35, of Berea, KY, departed this life on Thursday, April 30th, 2026. On July 11th, 2025, she married the love of her life, Sam Edwards.
Breanna was a Christian and loved everyone she met. She worked at US Bank in Berea, KY. She enjoyed photography, gardening, baking, singing, and spreading joy.
Breanna is survived by her loving husband, Samuel Edwards; her parents, Jack and Diane Kellerman; her sister, Kala Kellerman; her niece, Stella Cain; her nephew, Abram Cain; special aunt Sissie; mother-in-law, Sifa Edwards; father-in-law, Bryan Edwards; and sister-in-law, Lexi Edwards. She also leaves behind her grandmothers, Eula Lawrence and Patricia Bryant; best friends, Zoe and Devin Jones; her cats, Stevie, Snugs, Feyre, and Phoebe; and a host of extended family and friends.
Breanna was preceded in death by her grandfather Herbert Lawrence and cousin Pearlie Alcorn.
