Many of Berea’s faculty members were once first-generation students. As the first in his family to graduate from college, Julian Viera Jr. started out like many of the students he teaches today. His Ph.D. in Education: Teaching, Learning, and Culture from the University of Texas, El Paso, enables Viera to instruct Berea’s students in math education, online education, biliteracy, and digital literacies, while demonstrating what a first-gen success story looks like.
