Janet Ellen Ensign Bromley, of Huntington, WV passed on September 10, 2016, at the age of 91 after an extended period of decline. Janet is survived by her sons Darwin P. Bromley (wife Trella) of Jacksonville, FL, David B. Bromley (wife Julie) of Glenview, IL, and William H. Bromley (wife Nancy) of Morton Grove, IL, and by her beloved grandchildren, Miriam and Claire Bromley of Morton Grove, IL, and Elizabeth, M. Paul, Janet and Daniel Bromley of Jacksonville, FL. She is preceded in death by her parents, Darwin Abbott and Janet Etta Parsons Ensign of Huntington, WV, by her son, Peter Yarwood Bromley of Jacksonville, FL, and by her former husband and lifelong friend, N. Paul Bromley. Janet is also survived by Norma Bromley (widow of Paul Bromley), a family presence and dear friend. Janet E. Bromley was born on January 31, 1925, in Huntington, WV, to Darwin and Janet Ensign. She graduated from Marshall College Laboratory School in 1943, then attended Oberlin College, graduating in 1947 with degrees in both Music Performance and Music Education. After graduation Janet taught at Berea College before returning to Huntington. There she met and married Norman Paul Bromley August 5, 1949. Together they had four sons from 1950 to 1956. Janet initially subordinated her music career to the nurturing and care of her family. She supported her sons in their varied activities, acting as den mother, driver, art teacher, music coach, tour director, referee and ever-present mom. With Paul and her parents, she passed to her sons a love of games that strongly influenced their lives. She continued until all had graduated from university. During this family-focused time, she performed her violin for the sons and their friends, in church (particularly First Church UCC), in local orchestras and on special occasions. Once her sons had established their own lives and careers, Janet returned to her great love of performance and sharing her love of music. For over 50 years she played her violin and viola for thousands in and around Huntington. Janet performed in many varied venues, from formal concerts with the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, Huntington Chamber Orchestra, Marshall University Symphony Orchestra and the Huntington Pops Orchestra, to many less formal events – recitals, weddings, receptions, dinners, private performances, pit orchestras and even the occasional car dealership opening. She and her friends often performed as the Baroque Chamber Ensemble, and together they shared their virtuosity and love of music and acted as ambassadors of fine music to the Huntington community for many years. By coordinating Cabell County Schools, music performance ensembles, and state and local funding agencies, thousands of school children were exposed to the joy and positive experiences of musical performances through the EFFORT program that she established and led. With the collaboration of many, she created the On Line, In Rhythm program at the Huntington Museum of Art to introduce the arts – music, dance and visual- to local school children. For this work and the many other instances in which she gave her leadership, virtuosity and financial support, Janet was considered by many as Huntington’s “Matriarch of Music” and honored by city and state and by the communities that she loved. Away from her music, Janet led a private life. She was a lifelong (from birth) congregant of First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she played regularly and was an active leader and supporter. She loved gardening, particularly roses, and “Janet’s Jungle” was a place of relaxation and repose during her busy life. Janet enjoyed travel, particularly to visit family and to make new friends. Janet was an able financial leader for her family and community, having learned from her father and relying on the help of good friends like Robert Astorg and Ann Stamm. Janet was active on the boards of First Church, the Huntington Symphony, the Huntington Museum of Art, Service Machine Company, Mayfair Games Inc. and others. Janet provided financial support to several endeavors, including Mayfair Games (founded by Darwin and Peter). She was generous in supporting the music community and her church. The family suggests that memorials in Janet’s name be made to First Congregational United Church of Christ, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra and the Huntington Museum of Art. The family would particularly like to thank Treva Sullivan and her fellow companions who cared for and supported Janet during the final years of her life.

Louise Sutherland ’36, December 10, 2016.
Louise Virginia Sutherland, 101, passed away December 10, 2016 at the family home. She was born November 17, 1915 in Clintwood to the late Simpson Holliday Sutherland, and Pearl Rush Sutherland. Her early life was spent in Dickenson County. She was graduated from Berea College, and received a Master Degree in Library Science from Peabody College (now Vanderbilt). She began her career teaching in Dickenson County coaching girls’ basketball, and directing the girls’ Glee Club. She later moved to Giles County where she worked as County Librarian, in 1960 she began work at the Department of Education in Richmond, Virginia. Her final position was with the Office of Education in Washington D.C., retiring from there in 1985. Louise was an avid bridge player, a bridge teacher, a sports fan (go Redskins), a sponsor of the Johnnie B. Deel Library, a member of the local DAR Chapter, and the Dickenson County Historical Society. She is survived by her brothers, William L. Sutherland of Abingdon, VA; Fred G. Sutherland of Sandston, VA; sister, Jane S. Lyon of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Louise Virginia Sutherland will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Clintwood United Methodist Church, with burial following the service in the family plot in the Phipps Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Holliday Carico, Joe Simpson Carico, Douglas Fulton Sutherland, Earl Rush Sutherland, and Donald Steven Toth. Lois Marie Peters Blair, age 95, died Monday, October 31, 2016 at Hearth at The Crossings in Greenwood, Indiana. Mrs. Blair was a native of Owsley County, Kentucky born to the late Fred G. and Martha Chadwell Peters. She received both her BA and Masters in Special Education from South East Missouri State College and was a retired educator. She also enjoyed homemaking, art and quilting and was of the Methodist faith. Other than her parents Mrs. Blair was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William Blair, a brother, Orin Peters, a sister, Verna Edwards and a grandson, Michael Price. She is survived by, her daughter, Jean (Joe) Blair Robertson of Saint Louis, Missouri, her son, Jim (Karoline) Blair of Greenwood, Indiana, a sister, Mildred Carter of Hermitage, Tennessee and one granddaughter, Pamela Price of Bend, Oregon Funeral services will be 2:00pm Thursday, November 3rd, 2016 at the Davis & Powell Funeral Home, with Rev. Mary Huff Jennings ’39, November 27, 2016.
Mary Elisabeth Huff Jennings, age 99 years old, a musician, wife, mother, and grandmother died Sunday, November 27, 2016. She follows her husband of sixty two years in death. She will be buried in the Berea City Cemetery in Berea, Kentucky next to her husband. A memorial service will be held later in December. Mrs. Jennings was the daughter of Grant and Sudie Lowen Huff and was born in Berea, Kentucky on November 10, 1917. She attended Knapp Hall Elementary School which was associated with Berea College. During these early years Grant Huff offered his daughter a piano if she would promise to practice every day. It was at that time that Mary began her love affair with the piano. Later, Mrs. Jennings attended Berea High School in Berea and would later receive a BA degree from Berea College majoring in piano. One summer during college, in the evening, Mary boarded a Greyhound bus going to Chicago. Her goal was to study at the Conservatory…her plan was to arrive in Chicago in the morning so that she could make her way to the YWCA to make boarding arrangements. Mrs. Jennings completed an Oxford course in teaching piano in Chicago that summer and returned to Berea College in the fall.At the age of forty, having raised two daughters, Mary returned to her music. She enrolled back in Berea College to begin her study of the organ. In 1964, Mary and Gilbert moved to Tallahassee, Florida. Mr. Jennings would pursue his real estate development and Mary would enroll in Florida State University to continue her new love of the organ. While in Berea, Mrs. Jennings founded the Younger Woman’s Club. In Tallahassee, she was a member of the Woman’s Club and Music Guild. Mrs. Jennings was a member of the First Baptist Church and later East Hill Baptist Church. Her joy of piano and organ continued to be an important part of her life as she played for events all over Tallahassee. Her strong faith was ever present in her life until her death. Mr. and Mrs. Jennings were longtime supporters of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. They moved from Betton Hills to Westminster Oaks Retirement Community in 2000. Mrs. Jennings is survived by her two daughters, Gail Jennings Mosley and Caroline Jennings Harris. She is also survived by Caroline’s husband, Ray G. Harris. She leaves five grandchildren: Patrick, Page, Frank, Beth, and Brian. To them, Mrs. Jennings will always be known as “Ma”.

Hattie Giles Morris went to her heavenly home on October 13, 2016. Hattie was born on October 10, 1918 in Polk County, North Carolina the fifth daughter of Nathaniel Giles and Addie Lee Walker. Hattie wrote down her thoughts about how she wanted to be remembered and this is what she wanted everyone to know. First and foremost, she was thankful to have been a part of the Cherokee community and the Cherokee Baptist Church for 60 years. She became a Christian at age 12 and was a graduate of Berea College in 1939. During her adult life Hattie had many jobs including Sunday school teacher, training union teacher, School Teacher Lake Lure 1939-1941, U.S. Government worker, Washington D.C. 1941-1943, Air Force Rest Center, Lake Lure, NC 1943-1945, teacher Edneyville High School 1946, Gift Shop owner Chimney Rock 1947 to early 1950’s, school teacher at the old Cherokee High School in the early 1960’s, Gift shop owner Cherokee from 1950’s till 2009. Hattie was a trustee at Southwestern Community College in the 1980’s. Hattie was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband James Logan Morris Junior, son’s Robert Lee and James Logan Morris III. Surviving family include her beloved daughter in law Carolyn Morris (Jimmy), granddaughters Teri Lynn Morris of Cherokee and Melissa Morris Ogle (Scott) of Whittier. Grandchildren Logan Scott Ogle (Carson) and Emily Ann Ogle. Great-great granddaughter Caroline Ogle. Many nieces and nephews that she loved. Special friends Martha and Les McGuire. Services will be held Monday October 17, 2016 at Cherokee Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm till 7:00pm. The funeral service will begin at 7:00pm. Willard Edwin Swinford, 95, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at his home. He was born April 9, 1921, in Disputanta, Kentucky, in Rockcastle County to John Sherman and Daisy Smith Swinford, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a retired professor for the Department of Industrial Technology at Eastern Kentucky University and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII where he served in the Pacific Theatre. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Redmon Swinford and a newborn son, David Swinford, and is survived by one son, Michael Lee Swinford (Bobbi) of Las Vegas, Nevada; one daughter, Sylvia Davis (William E.) of Richmond; three grandchildren, Jennifer Avery (Todd), Jessica Cruse (Anthony) and Melanie Rivera (Anthony); five great-grandchildren, Sam Eye, Makayla Cruse, Kassi Eye, Tanner Cruse, and Jackson Rivera, as well as his special Maltese companion, Gem. A special Thanks to his caregivers, Lisa Short, Elmer Perkins, Sherry Shaw, Teresa Foster, and Mary Shepard. Annie L. Fox Bryson City – Annie L. Fox, 92, of Bryson City went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 24, 2014. She taught High School English for over 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Fox. She is survived by two daughters, Jamie F. Grimsley and husband Robert, Sherry F. Ginn and husband Richard; four grandchildren, Laura Kleinman and husband Brad, Natalie Grimsley, Effrem Creasman and wife Cheryl and Lance Creasman; and three great grandchildren, Hailey Creasman, Austin Creasman, and Diamond Mason. Retha Herbert, age 98, died November 21, 2016 at her residence. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 21, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Long officiating. She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin Herbert; father, John Henry Crase; mother, Lila Elam Crase; brothers, Thelman Crase, Elmer Crase, Chaldon Crase, Cigal Crase, Kenneth Crase, Omer Wages, Chester Wages; sisters, Ressie Dickey and Olean Wages. Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Herbert Parker of North Little Rock, AR; son, Geoffrey S. Retha was born to tobacco farmer in Wheel Rim, a small Appalachian community in Southeastern Kentucky. She graduated high school and then attained her bachelor’s degree in Berea, Kentucky, following which she landed her first teaching job in a one room schoolhouse in Beattyville, Kentucky. She wed her husband of 50 years in 1948 and his career led them to Cincinnati, OH, where their children were born. From there they moved to St. Louis, MO, Long Island, NY, Woodbury Heights, NJ and finally to Tuscaloosa, where her husband eventually retired from Hunt Oil Company. Following their retirement, she loved out her life in Coker in the home she and her husband built together. Our mom loved meeting and visiting people, but none more than her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and always placed our needs above her own. She enjoyed simple pleasures like a bridge game, a coffee klatsch, or sharing a home-cooked meal with friends. She loved the Lord, was a lifelong student of The Bible and enjoyed serving in the church. She will be deeply missed her family. We can never express our gratitude for the privilege of enjoying the love and laughter she brought us during her long and fruitful life. Long-time Benton resident, George W. “Bill” Lockin, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 14, 2016 after a brief illness. Bill was living in Brentwood, TN at the time of his death. A native of Berea, KY, born on August 28, 1923 to Earl Wyman and Mary Jane Lockin. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Earl Wyman Lockin, Jr. and his wife of 67 years, Elwanda Dalton Lockin. After serving his country for five years, Bill returned to the University of Kentucky to complete his education, graduating with a Master’s degree in Mining Engineering. Upon graduation, Bill was hired by Inland Steel Coal Company in Wheelwright, KY where he worked for 31 years. In 1966, Inland moved operations to Southern Illinois where Bill held several management positions at the Sesser and McLeansboro mines. He retired in 1982 as the Mine Manager of Inland Steel #2 in McLeansboro. Bill and his wife, Wanda, enjoyed camping in their Airstream camper and were members of the Wally Byam Airstream Caravan Club in Southern Illinois. He was also an active member of the Lion’s Club International, Methodist Men, Benton Booster Club, Benton American Legion, and an active amateur radio operator. An incredible and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, Bill was loved and adored by his children, David William Lockin (wife Jennifer Ryan Lockin) of Lilburn, GA, daughter Karen Lockin Bachus of Rome, GA, and daughter Jane Lockin Hutson (husband John Hutson) of Brentwood, TN , grandchildren Matthew Lockin (wife Melissa Lockin) of Phoenix, AZ, Jonathan Lockin of Lilburn, GA, Avery Bachus of Marietta, GA, Madelyn Hutson of Providence, RI, and Kathryn Hutson of Brentwood, TN. A memorial service will be held at Benton First United Methodist Church, 203 Church St. Benton, IL at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016. The eulogy will be given by Jim Muir and the service will be officiated by Mark Minor. She is survived by her children; James Jr., and Ray “”Buzz”” Compton Sr., (Becky), Kathy Jordon and Sheila Kenny; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Bob Porter, 83, of High Point, North Carolina, was promoted to Heaven on Friday, July 13, 2007 from the Hospice Home of High Point. He was born November 13, 1923 in Heidelberg, Ky., the son of the Lucian R. Porter and Edna Pendleton Porter. In 1988, he retired as an accountant with American Bakeries and was employed by the City of High Point. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army. He was a member of the Faith Missionary Alliance Church and an active Gideon. On April 20, 1946 he married Sylvia Watson and she preceded him in death on September 12, 1999. Surviving are two daughters, Cyndi L. (and Jim) Price, of High Point, NC; Rebecca Ann (and Walter) Bess, of Fairfax, Calif.; two grandchildren, Eric J. (and Jennifer) Price and Matthew J. Price. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Faith Missionary Alliance Church in Argyle, Ky. by the Pastor Mike Gates. Interment will be in the Valley Oak Cemetery in Argyle. William Friedlander, Navy V-12 ’44, December 16, 2015.
William Friedlander passed quietly Wednesday night. He lived a very full 90 years. He was a man of passion who loved many things. First and foremost he loved his wife Mitzi. They were married over 60 years. He was enthralled by her beauty and talent as she was a singer and actress of prodigious talent. He loved going out to arts events (orchestra, theater, ballet, opera and the meals after the events). He was an original Board Member of Actors Theater and President of an influential local arts performance and support group known as the Arts Club. He loved liberal politics and often put himself out there for the causes he held dear. He and Mitzi participated in the Open Housing marches in Louisville and the March on Frankfort in 1964 (he and Mitzi attended the 50th commemoration last year). He was a part of the anti-war movement marching against the Vietnam War. He was an early member of the Kentucky Civil Liberties Union, interfaith Paths to Peace and has supported equal rights movements his entire life. He loved education and received his PhD in Urban Planning 50 years after he was awarded his law degree. He loved the Episcopal Church (Christ Church Cathedral specifically) and the Diocese of Kentucky, and was very active in this community through the Cursillo movement and other governing bodies and Conventions. He loved good local and national policy and was a founder of several neighborhood associations (Butchertown, Cherokee Triangle and Bonnycastle). He helped start the Neighborhood Development Corporation, served on the Board of the Portland Museum. He loved politics and served as a House member in the Kentucky General Assembly (’51-’53). He was a strong Union supporter and worked for the State AFL-CIO and developed many projects to supply low income housing for the elderly. He also represented the American Federation of Teachers. He loved his sisters (Fadel and Suzanne and their children) deeply and picked up the habit of reading all signs while driving because he read them to his sisters to encourage them to be inquisitive. He loved his daughter Fadel and his son Eric. He also loved a good party! The annual Friedlander Christmas party will go on this year as a celebration of his life. It was only in the last few months that his health prevented him from doing all the things he loved. We hope his rest is sweet – it is certainly well deserved.

Margaret Bowman Peterson ’45, November 30, 2016.
Margaret Bowman Peterson, age 92, passed away peacefully at Peachtree Creek Senior Living Facility on November 30, 2016. Margaret was born March 11, 1924 in Louisville, KY and raised in Berea, KY. She was a lifelong devoted lover of her beautiful home state. She was predeceased by her father, Robert O. Bowman, mother, Ann McGuire Bowman, sister, Edith “Mickey” Evans, and brothers, Howard Linville and David O. Bowman. Margaret is survived by her husband of 64 years, Eugene H. Peterson, sons Timothy A. Peterson, C. Mark Peterson (Cindy), daughter Margaret Ann Martin (Don), 4 granddaughters – Emily Peterson, Anna Armstrong (Daniel), Angela Fiedler (Brock), Rachel Peterson –and 3 great grandchildren, Valerie and Claire Fiedler and Eli Armstrong. Margaret was valedictorian of her Berea High School graduating class. After high school, she attended Berea College then went on to receive her R.N. degree from the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She practiced nursing for many years, first as a pediatric nurse then as Head Nurse of General Electric Company in Louisville. Later she served 20+ years as an ER nurse at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. After her retirement from nursing, she served as President of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary in Atlanta and as a Stephen Minister at her church, Mt. Paran Church of God. Margaret was also an active member of the DAR, Cherokee Chapter, in Atlanta and a member of the UDC, Atlanta 18. Always a student of the Bible, she participated actively in many Bible studies over the years. Margaret was utterly devoted to her Lord and to her family – the consummate loving wife, mother and grandmother. We will carry her legacy of love forever. Our deepest thanks go out to the wonderful caregivers at Peachtree Creek who cared for her with such love and compassion. Similarly, heartfelt thanks go to those at Agape Hospice who mercifully helped make her final days comfortable. Margaret will be remembered at a memorial service at Mt. Paran Church, 2055 Mount Paran Road, Atlanta, 30327, on Monday, December 5th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet friends before the service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at National Military Cemetery. Leila Smith Stewart ’45, December 2, 2016.
Leila M. Stewart passed away peacefully on December 2, 2016 at the age of 97. Born 7/30/1919. She was a loving mother, smart and hard-working and kind. A Kentucky native, she graduated from Berea College and taught elementary school for many years. Leila also obtained her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Tennessee. She enjoyed needlepoint, couponing, and time with family. Leila was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Burton Stewart, Jr.; parents, Alec and Phena Smith; brothers, Chester Morgan, Denver Estell, and Virgil; sisters, Beatrice, and Ida. She is survived and will be deeply missed by her devoted son, Alexander Stewart; special friend and neighbor Mrs. King; and other extended family and friends. Rena Glenn Yount Dyer, 92, Of Morganton, NC Died Monday, September 12, 2016. Born in Richmond, VA On February 23, 1924, She was the daughter of the late Glenn O. Yount and Mary May Yount. Mrs. Dyer was a 1946 graduate of Berea College in Berea, KY. Following her graduation, she married Dr. John Dyer of Petersburg, WV. After being a military couple and working in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Texas, Mississippi, and Missouri, they settled in Rochester, MN, where her husband was on the Staff of the Mayo Clinic. Rena was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Rochester where she served as a deacon, taught Sunday school, and was President of The Women’s Association. She was an active member and officer of The Alice Mayo Society, and she was active in the Rochester Figure Skating Club and the Eastwood Women’s Golf Club. In 2009, the couple moved to Morganton, NC to be near family. Rena is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Kath and her Husband, Dr. Philip Kath, of Morganton; A son, David Dyer and his wife, Nina, of Vila Velha, Brazil; A grandson, John Dyer and his wife, Priscilla, of Vila Velha; Granddaughters, Lydia Dyer of Newcastle, United Kingdom and Katie Boyd and her husband, Malcolm, of Winston-Salem, NC; And a sister, Betty Gregory of Southern Pines, NC. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel at Grace Ridge Retirement Center at 10 A.M., Monday, September 19, 2016. A private family burial will be held at Burke Memorial Park. Richard Lee Gentry, 88, a veteran of World War II, a member of the Richmond Church of Christ, and a resident of the Saint Andrews Retirement Community, died on Tuesday, July 1. Lee was born on February 12, 1926, at Level Green (Rockcastle County), Kentucky, the son of the late Richard and Maude Gentry. After graduating from high school, he attended Berea College and then joined the Army Air Corps just before World War II ended. Upon his discharge, he attended Eastern Kentucky University where he earned his B.S. degree in 1948 with a double major in mathematics and physical education. While at Eastern, he met Arevia Hannah Weddle, whom he later married on June 28, 1946. He went on to receive his M.S. in Physical Education from Eastern and the Ed.D. from the University of Kentucky. Lee’s teaching career, all in Kentucky, began at Livingston, where he also coached basketball. From Livingston he moved to East Bernstadt and then to Marion as superintendent of schools. In 1956, the family moved to Frankfort where Lee served as State Supervisor of Health, Safety, and Physical Education for eight years. In 1964, President Robert R. Martin recruited him to teach at Eastern Kentucky University. There he primarily supervised student teachers of physical education. While at Eastern, Lee was an active member of the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, serving as secretary/treasurer and president of this organization. He received a Life Membership Award in 1964 and the W. H. Mustaine Award in 1974. During his 19 years at Eastern, Lee served as the Faculty Representative on the Board of Regents and served on the Arlington Board of Directors. He chaired the Department of Physical Education from 1980 until his retirement in 1983. The College of Education inducted Lee Gentry into its Wall of Honor in 2009. Lee took a leadership role in community affairs before and after his retirement. He spent eighteen years on the Richmond Parks and Recreation Board and also helped organize a Senior League for golf at Arlington. A long-time member of the Richmond Church of Christ, he served as an elder and started the Elderberries program for seniors. Lee Gentry is survived by his wife of 68 years, Hannah Weddle Gentry; two daughters, Carol (John) Williams of McKinney, Texas, and Ellen Rini of Richmond; five grandchildren, Gavin (Megan) Williams of Plano, Texas, Zane (Jodi) Williams of McKinney, Texas, Sarah (Philip) Rini Gump of Richmond, Lucy Rini of Frankfort, and Woody Rini of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, Buck and Gentry Williams of McKinney, Texas; a sister, Nina Kline of Cincinnati, Ohio; and special friends Earl and Lucille Adams of Danville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Maude Gentry, and five siblings, Billy Gentry, Bobby Gentry, Norma Stevens, Norene Manis, and Nellie Ratley. Pallbearers will be Woody Rini, Gavin Williams, Philip Gump, Chris Collins, Zack Gentry and Ben Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Titus Black, Larry Bond, Tom Brown, Mike Grimes, Jack Hall, Shirley Kearns, Joe Koger, Ron Lawson, Al Morris, Odell Phillips, Byno Rhodes, and Jim Stull. Visitation will be at the Oldham, Roberts, and Powell Funeral Home on Friday, July 4, 12:00-4:00. The funeral will be at the Richmond Church of Christ on Saturday, July 5, at 12:30. Visitation at the church building will precede the funeral at 11:00. Burial will follow the funeral at the Richmond City Cemetery. Salinas “The last whistle has been blown. The last flag has been thrown”. “Coach Joest” has gone to the Great Athletic Field in the Sky. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a true friend to many. Coach passed away peacefully Tuesday evening Sept. 20, 2016, of complications from Renal Failure. Coach Joest was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Milford, UT. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Huntington Park. This is where his passion for sports began as an All City Basketball player in high school. In 1944, Coach enlisted in the United States Navy. He spent time at the Naval Air Technical Training (V-12) facility in Memphis, TN., Berea College in Kentucky and Bucknell University of Pennsylvania. He then went through the Naval Aviation Preparatory Program (V-5) at the University of Pennsylvania, and finished his training at the Naval Air Station in San Diego. In 1945, he was appointed as a candidate to West Point. As WW II ended, he was Honorably Discharged from the United States Navy. Coach finished his military service, attending college at Pepperdine University in Malibu. His love of sports hit a high when he made “All League” playing basketball for the “Bluewaves”. It was at Pepperdine University that he met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Lancastor. He and Betty were married in 1948. Coach graduated in 1950, and they moved to Salinas, to start his coaching career. Coach began teaching at Washington Junior High School in 1950. He was instrumental in initiating the colored shorts program for Athletic Achievement and building the military style obstacle course so many students ran through over his 35 years as a coach. He was always positive, fair, and supportive of his students. They loved him and his wonderful sense of humor. During his teaching career, Coach tried to figure out the game of golf, refereeing Basketball, Football and playing City League Softball and Basketball, until he began to be called the “Old Man”, by his younger counterparts in those later days. Coach retired in 1985. He knew it was time to retire when the kids would say, “My Dad had you as his coach when he attended school at WJH”. If he wasn’t on the Fairways with his cronies, he would enjoy spending time refining his craft at “Pine Needle Basket Weaving”. He took many “Best of Show” and “First Place” awards at the Monterey County Fair. He was an avid Bridge player and enjoyed playing Cribbage with his friends. He spent his later years holding Betty’s hand, which he called “O.F.S”, (Old folk’s sex), watching sports on TV and complaining how they didn’t play it like he did back in his day. If you were lucky enough to be a former student or one of his buddies, you knew what a great friend you had in Coach Joest. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his daughter, Karen Joest Cortez. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Betty; his sons, Bill and Philip Joest, both of Salinas; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, William and Maryanne Joest of Chandler, AZ. As per his wishes, there will be no service. His former students will remember in that smelly old gymnasium, hung a sign with Coaches favorite quote that read: “Don’t Say I Can’t, Say I’ll Try”. KINGSPORT – Nell Waddle, 87, entered into rest Oct. 26, 2011. Born in Alleghany, Va., Nell was a long-time resident of Kingsport. She was a former Administrative Assistant at ETSU, and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Lewis Waddle; two sons, Fred and wife, Ann Waddle of Raleigh, N.C., Jerry Waddle of Hendersonville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Rob, Ryan and fiancé, Lynsey, Lindsay, Jason, and Logan; one great-granddaughter, Paisley Waddle; two brothers, Walter Matheny and Harry Matheny; and one sister, Shirley Case. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Holston Manor with burial to follow at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Lewis E. Waddle ’47, husband of Nellie Matheny Waddle ’46, September 7, 2016.
Lewis E. Waddle Jr., age 94, passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at Holston Manor in Kingsport, Tennessee. Lewis was born in Somerset, Kentucky, on May 13, 1922 to parents Lewis E. Waddle Sr., and Anna Prather Waddle. He graduated from Berea College in Berea, KY, and served honorably in the Army Air Corp as a pilot during World War II flying troops and supplies to Europe, Africa, South America, and back to the states. After returning from duty, he met and married Nell Matheny, and settled in Kingsport. The majority of his working life was spent as an accountant for Holston Army Defense which was a contractor through Tennessee Eastman. After his retirement, he continued to stay busy delivering furniture for a local company, helping neighbors with light construction projects, cutting firewood, and building things in his workshop, including toys for his grandchildren. Lewis is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert, Raymond and John, and his sister Anne Killinger. He is survived by his sister Mary Virginia Henry, sons Jerome Waddle, Fred Waddle and his wife Ann, grandchildren Lindsay, Jason, Robert and his wife Casey, Ryan and his wife Lynsey, and Logan and his wife Rebecca, great grandchildren Lena, Jake, Maggie, Paisley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service is scheduled at East Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 4997 Memorial Blvd. Kingsport, Tennessee, at 3:00 pm on Tuesday September 13, 2016. A reception will follow at East Lawn Funeral Home.

Waynesville, James Roy “Jim” Edwards, 92, entered into eternal life on Monday, August 29, 2016 at Autumn Care of Waynesville following a long illness. He was born in Barnardsville, Buncombe County, North Carolina on September 29, 1923, the son of Barnard Lee and Cleopatra Cleveland Bartlett Edwards. After graduating from Barnardsville High School in 1941, he entered Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, to pursue an agricultural curriculum. James’ college career was interrupted by the United States’ entry into the Second World War. He was called to active duty in early 1943 and underwent training to become an air gunner and radio operator on B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. His crew was deployed to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations and assigned to the 717th Squadron, 449th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 15th Army Air Force. Flying from a base at Grottaglie, Italy, he participated in air strikes against the Axis war machine in Italy, France, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Balkans. He was wounded by anti-aircraft fire during one of the last American raids on the oil refineries at Ploiesti, Romania in August of 1944, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to duty and finished his mission quota, receiving the Air Medal with three bronze Oak Leaves and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five battle stars. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, James returned to Berea to complete a Bachelor of Science degree, which was awarded in 1948. There he met June Settle of West Virginia, to whom he married on August 10, 1947. Following a brief stint of teaching veteran’s school in his hometown, he enrolled at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, from which he received the degree of Master of Science in Animal Science. In 1953, James began work as a supervisor of the dairy at the Mountain Experiment Station (now the Mountain Research Station, but still known locally as the “Test Farm”). Ten years later, he was promoted to Superintendent of the Station, in which capacity he served for twenty-five years. His tenure there was among the factors that led to his induction into the Western North Carolina Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2002. He was active for decades in the Waynesville Lions Club, where he served in several official capacities, including its presidency. Following his retirement in 1988, he remained active in a number of pursuits, including wildflower photography and the construction of a segment of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail along the Haywood-Jackson County line. He served for several years as a member of the board of the Waynesville Housing Authority. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, and served for several years on its Administrative Board. James was preceded in death by his parents and by an infant son, Douglas. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, June Elise Settle Edwards; a son, Samuel Edwards (Kay) of Waynesville; a daughter, Katharine (Pete) Lowery, of Bostic; a brother, Robert Edwards (Dorothy) of Clemson, South Carolina; three grandsons; David Edwards, Cory Lowery and Joel Lowery; one granddaughter, Rachel Edwards; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday September 2, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, Waynesville with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Robert L. Jones, age 78 of Nancy, Ky., passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. He was born on August 31, 1930 in Berea, Ky., the son of the late Clyde and Elsie William Jones. After graduation from the Kentucky Military Institute, he attended the Bowling Green Business College. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served eight years in service. Mr. Jones was a retired toy manager for the K-Mart in Lexington, Ky. He was a Kentucky Colonel and member of the Union Church in Berea, Ky. Mr. Jones married Sedahlia Maxine Wood Jones on June 12, 1966 in Nancy, Ky. They lived in Lexington, Ky., for 26 years and then returned to their home in Nancy, Ky. on their farm in 1992. Survivors include his wife; a brother, Russell C. (and Lou) Jones of Owensboro, Ky.; a brother-in-law, Winfrey (and Peggy) Wood of Nancy, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Wanda Wood of Nancy, Ky.; four nephews, Newell C. (and Amy) Jones of Mt. Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Stepp Adams, widow of Grey Adams, passed away at her home July 27, 2016. Libby, as she was known by friends and family, was born in Marion, NC December 3, 1927, a daughter of the late John and Florence Pendergrass Stepp. She attended Winthrop College and came to Clemson to work for J.P. Stevens. While in Clemson she met Grey Adams who was an ROTC Instructor for the college. After marrying, they spent many years in the USAF and traveled extensively. Upon retirement they made their home in Columbia. Libby became involved with Workshop Theater of S.C. and made many lasting friendships. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and remained active as long as she was able, but never lost her excitement for life. Libby was predeceased by her husband, a son, Steven and two brothers, Dr. James Stepp and Dr. Hubert Stepp. The last member of her immediate family, she is survived by her nephews Jim Stepp of Union, John Stepp of Clemson, Ken Stepp of Kentucky and Ben Stepp of Greer and her many workshop friends. BARBOUR, William Lewis, 92, born in Roanoke, Va. on February 4, 1924, son of the late William Daniel Barbour and Susie Lewis Barbour, died peacefully at home on November 19, 2016, with his loving wife of 53 years, Jessie Speas Barbour, at his side. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Wilson Barbour. He was called Lewis by his family until college days, when he became William or “Bill”. Bill served his country well during World War II, enlisting in December 1942 and served in the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific until December 1945. He returned to Berea College and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Business. He was employed as a salesman in the power transmission business, later forming his own company, The William L. Barbour Company, which he sold in 1984, but continued with the buyer until he retired in 1986. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Belmont Ward, where his funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22. His family will receive friends one hour before the funeral at the church located at 3541 Cogbill Rd. in Chesterfield County. Interment will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 26, at Dale Memorial Park. CALLISON, Lavaun H. of Tucson, AZ, passed away on November 14, 2016 at The Villas at La Canada in Tucson. She was born in Mouth of Wilson, VA, to Neal and Emma Halsey on May 22, 1926. Lavaun attended Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson and was a graduate of Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, as was her late husband Gilmer W. Callison. Lavaun received her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Arizona. She taught school with unbounded energy and positive enthusiasm for 24 years in the Tucson Unified School District, retiring in 1986. Lavaun was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church, and was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Tucson League of Women Voters, and the Berea College and Oak Hill Academy Alumni Associations. Lavaun was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and aunt. She was an avid Arizona Wildcat basketball fan and a gracious hostess. She is survived by her sister, Shirley Hash of Virginia; her daughters, Alice Callison (John Richardson) of Tucson and Ann Callison of Williams Bay, Wisconsin; her four grandchildren, Andrea, David, James and Trevor, and a considerable number of nephews and nieces and their families. Joan M. Dowdy, age 87, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family Monday, September 19, 2016. She is preceded in death by parents; J Haynes and Anna Miller, and a new-born baby daughter. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years; Dr. James M. Dowdy, children; James II (Sue), Jon (Jackie), Bill (Elizabeth) Dowdy, and Anne (Lance) Kesterson. Grandchildren: Adam, Jonathan, Joshua, Chris (Heather), Joe (Minde), Wade, Mason, and Elyse, as well as eight loving great-grandchildren. After graduating as valedictorian of Fayetteville High School (W. Va.), Joan attended Virginia Intermont College, graduating with a liberal arts diploma. Two years later she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science Education. Joan briefly taught high school science before marrying and becoming a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Among her many passions in life: Joan was an accomplished pianist, an avid flower gardener, and enjoyed numerous memberships in women’s social organizations in her neighborhood and church. Those who knew Joan saw a champion for young people to succeed in education and learning. Above all she loved the Lord and shared her faith continuously with her children. A visitation will be held at North Baptist Church, 76 Charleston Ave, Columbus, OH 43214, Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 9:30am to 11:00am with a celebration of Joan’s life directly following at North Baptist Church. Norma Faye Small, 88, of Pinehurst, NC passed away Tuesday November 15th, 2016 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital. She was born on February 10th, 1928 in Jamestown, Kentucky to Arnold and Letha Holder. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Edwin Small, her first husband, Richard Crell Petitt, and her eldest daughter Patricia Ann. Norma was an active member of Community Presbyterian Church. She was an avid golfer and member of Pinehurst Country Club. Norma was a member of the Silver Foils Service Organization previously serving as President. Norma enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends. Favorites included her chocolate cream and coconut pies, and there was always a tin of chocolate chip cookies in the house. Her hobbies included playing bridge with her friends and traveling the world. She is survived by a daughter Cheryl Lynn Petitt and husband Frank Story of Johns Creek, Georgia; two sons, Ronald Lee Petitt and wife Diana of Vancouver, Washington and Robert Edward Petitt and Maureen of Rescue, California; step-son Charles Small and wife Leslie of Albuquerque, New Mexico; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Sunday November 20, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Community Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jim Ewing officiating. She is survived by her daughter Sharon Cox, very special granddaughter Christine ‘Betsy’ (Bobby) Cody, her great-grandsons Joseph and Daniel; granddaughter Genevieve (Bobby) Perry and her children Kelsea and Caleb; son Michael L. Edward K. Cook Jr., age 89, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2016. He was born on July 19, 1927 the son of the late Edward K. Cook and Myrtle Farley Cook of Pulaski County, Kentucky. Mr. Cook was a graduate of Berea College. He earned a Masters degree in education from East Tennessee State University, attended the Munich, Germany branch of Boston University, and accrued hours toward a doctorate in education from the Karlsruhe, Germany branch of the University of Southern California. Mr. Cook was principal of Shouns Elementary and Mountain City Grammar Schools before accepting a position with the United States Dependent Schools, European Area (USDESEA). While overseas for 20 years, Mr. Cook served as the youngest of the five superintendents who oversaw American schools stretching from Pakistan to England. At one time, he had the unique position of simultaneously overseeing schools on three continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa) with schools in Greece, Crete, Libya, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and Turkey. He was also variously stationed in England, Germany, and France. While in France, he supervised the closing of the American schools there as a result of the President Charles de Gaulle’s decree that all American bases be closed. Mr. Cook was a member of the Frist United Methodist Church, where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School prior to going overseas. In recent years, he served on the Board of Trustees. He served as publicity chair for the Johnson County Community Theater for several years. He was an enthusiastic horseman and raised Tennessee Walking Horses for 25 years. An expert gardener, he won Southeastern awards for giant pumpkins and squash. His latest challenge was giant watermelons. He was an active promoter of the Johnson County Pumpkin Festival. Mr. Cook served on the Johnson County Bank Board of Directors for 25 years. In his later years, he was an avid reader and turned to writing with his first book, The Long Trail, followed by its sequel, The Trail’s End. Mr. Cook was a Mason, and was one of the few surviving veterans of WWII in Johnson County, having served in the United States Navy. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn McQueen Cook, his daughter, Stephanie L. Cook (and her husband, Dr. Masaru Okabe), grandson Kye L. Okabe, the families of various beloved nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 13, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church of Mountain City. Yvonne Garner, 85, of Chatsworth, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Regency Park Health Care Center in Dalton. She was born in Oakwood, Va., and raised in Bradshaw W.Va. She graduated from college in Berea, Ky. Mrs. Garner was a member of First Baptist Church of Chatsworth where she was a member of the Sanctuary Choir and the Senior Adult Choir. She taught music and chorus in the Murray County School System for 28 years. She was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Jones, and brother, L.K. Perkins. She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Garner of Chatsworth; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Fatima Fields of Eatonton and Mike and Tracy Fields of Jackson; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Kenneth Odum of Eton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Sue Perkins of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., and Bill and Joyce Perkins of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Bessie “Betsy” Looney Hedgecock, age 87, passed away on October 9, 2016, at Guggenheimer Nursing Home-Hospice Unit. She was married to the late A. Carter Hedgecock for 57 years. Born February 4, 1929, in the Grapefield community of Bland County, Va, she was the daughter of the late James and Linnie Kidd Looney. She attended a one-room school in Grapefield, graduated from Rocky Gap High School, and received a degree from Berea College. She was the first on either side of her family to graduate from college. As a schoolteacher she taught in Pulaski; Camp Hill, Pa; and Lynchburg. The last 17 years of her teaching career were at Sandusky Elementary. During the Sandusky tenure she completed the work for a Master’s in Education from Lynchburg College. A member of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church since 1960, she was actively involved teaching Sunday School, working in the mission organizations, and serving on several committees. She tackled the challenge of the red clay in the family yard and became an avid gardener. She loved to plant trees and grow African violets. She learned to hand quilt when she was 60 and made numerous quilts – many for family members. Family was the core of her being. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Lewis and husband Kenneth of Concord; and her grandson, Kenneth Lewis, Jr. of Bent Mountain. Also surviving are a sister Barbara Stinson and husband Earl of Gainesville; a brother Irvin Looney and wife Wacuba of London, Ky; a brother-in-law, James Hedgecock and wife Becky of Southport, N.C; a sister-in-law, Lucille Hedgecock of Mooresville, N.C; several nieces and nephews; and close family friends James and Kathy Kidd of Grapefield. She was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church for 79 years where she sang in the choir, served in WMU and many committees, and was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. She sang with Seniors on Stage, was a talented artist, seamstress, and loved to crochet. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters; Pauline Wall, Madge Sturdivant, Helen Cashion, Lillian Foster, and Betty Waugh and six brothers; Ernest and Edgar Linney (twins), Douglas and Donald Linney (twins), Joe Linney, Dan Linney and one infant daughter, Sylvia Pearson. After graduating from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky as a registered nurse, Edith and her best friend Rosemary Pennington decided to follow Horace Greeley’s advice and moved out west “to where the men were” and landed in San Angelo. Here she met and married the love of her life, Harold Clendennen. Edith and Harold enjoyed 60 years of devotion to each other and had four children. The fourth of five children, she is preceded in death by her brother Cecil and sisters Clarinda and Arizona. She is survived by her husband, Harold; son, Darrell and wife Janice of Justin, Texas; daughter, Dana Keena of San Angelo; son, David of San Angelo; and son, Dwayne and wife Raine; and grandsons Dane Andrew and Luke Riley of Buda, Texas; brother, H. Gaylyn Irene PRICE CUMMING of Downers Grove, IL died on Tuesday September 27, 2016 while visiting family in Dunedin, FL. Gaylyn was born in Johnson City, TN May 29, 1931, as one of eight children to Hazel Mae (Calvert) and Galen Royer Price. She is survived by her loving husband William Stoner Cumming and their three children: Ann Calvert (Cumming) DiGregorio, Marie Elizabeth (Cumming) Kirby and husband Michael, and David Price Cumming plus five grandchildren: Emily Kathryne Kirby, Anthony Joseph DiGregorio IV, Monica Bryn Kirby, Thomas James Kirby, and Allison Cumming DiGregorio. Of her seven siblings she is survived by Judith Ariel (Price) Johnson, Keith Everett Price, Muriel Alice (Price) Broyles, and Larry Douglas Price and predeceased by Bernice Lucille (Price) Beasley, Pauline Pearl (Price) Elliott, and Carroll Alvin Price. Gaylyn is also survived by countless extended family members and friends. Gaylyn graduated at the top of her class at Mary Hughes High School in Piney Flats, TN. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics from Berea College in Kentucky. Gaylyn worked in the records library of the FBI in Washington D.C. and met William through mutual friends while he was in the United States Air Force. They married on August 24, 1957 at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in D.C. They moved to Pittsburgh, PA and soon settled in the Chicago, IL area. She was an extremely considerate and kind woman who not only made a genuine effort to get to know people but also kept in touch with hand written notes, thoughtful gifts, and caring service to others. Gaylyn participated as a member of the Rush Memorial University Memory and Aging Project Study until her death, in hopes that the research could benefit others. Her love of family, travel, camping, sports, Scrabble, jigsaw puzzles, cards, crossword puzzles, and collecting paperweights is now carried on by her loving children and grandchildren. Although Gaylyn worked as a patient contact dietician and a bank account auditor she is remembered more for her valued leadership and volunteer support throughout her life in many church, school, and community organizations. (First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange, PTO, New Comers Club, Salt Creek Campers, Investment Club, Camp Fire Girls, Oak Trace – A Lifespace Community ) Per her wishes, Gaylyn was cremated. Dr. Gillespie grew up in Lebanon, Virginia, and in 1952 graduated from Berea College at Berea, Kentucky. While at Berea, he met and married Sara Ann Boyd, a native of Oak Ridge. From Berea, they moved to Charlottesville, Virginia where he attended University of Virginia School of Medicine. After earning his medical degree, the family moved to Boston Massachusetts where he completed his internship at Chelsey Naval Hospital. He was a Navy Flight Surgeon at Pensacola Naval Air Station and while there became an avid golfer. Eventually the family moved to Oak Ridge, where Dr. Gillespie practiced family medicine for 34 years. He was loved by his patients. While his children were in school, he and his wife, Sara accompanied the Oak Ridge High School Band on trips to South America and Europe. Dr. Gillespie was active in the Oak Ridge Country Club and enjoyed playing golf. He and Sara supported the Civic Ballet. He enjoyed classical musical and the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra. He was an avid reader and had a wonderful sense of humor. He and Sara loved entertaining friends and being with family. He was preceded in death by parents, Peery Brittain Gillespie and Annie Lee Jackson of Lebanon, Virginia, by brother Joseph Peery Gillespie, and sister, Mary Lynn Keller, and his wife Sara Boyd Gillespie. Jim Sr. would be pleased to know that he passed on the same day as Arnold Palmer, his idol. Survivors include his children James T. MORGANTON – Mable Berniece Meeks Mull, 86, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, at Grace Ridge in Morganton. Born Feb. 13, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Eula Gregory Meeks. Mable grew up in Swannanoa and graduated from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky where she met her husband of 62 years, B. Rondal Mull. Mable worked as a dietician at Broughton Hospital and as a high school science teacher at the North Carolina School for the Deaf. She retired with 30 years of state service. Mable and Rondal were lifelong residents of Burke County where they were active in the Drexel and Morganton communities. Together they enjoyed traveling, golfing, genealogy and the publishing of the Mull, Gregory and McNeely family histories. In her later years, Mable enjoyed her time with her Grace Ridge friends, playing bridge, mahjong and reading. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives through social media. She was their “Mommay”. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, husband, Rondal Mull. She is survived by daughter, Lynne McCarthy and husband, Mike of Roswell, Ga., and their children, Ben Allen, Caitlin McCarthy and Brian McCarthy; daughter, Susan Ellis and husband, Dr. DeWitt Ellis of High Point, and their children, Dr. Chase Ellis and his wife, Jessica, and great-grandchildren, Peyton and Logan Ellis; Dr. Stuart Ellis and Dr. Spencer Ellis; daughter, Janet Crump and husband, Ronnie of Morganton, and their son, Casey Crump. Patty Frasher Wallace (April 5, 1930–November 20, 2016) was the daughter of Charles Lace Frasher and Myrtle Portis Frasher of Fort Gay, West Virginia. In 1948, she was the Valedictorian of Fort Gay High School and graduated with a degree in Home Economics from her beloved alma mater, Berea College in 1952. Always athletic, she was able to pursue sports at Berea. She pitched for the softball team, was a guard on the basketball team and competed in synchronized swimming. Two hours after graduating, she married Virgil C. Wallace of Louisa, Kentucky in the Berea College Chapel. Besides homemaking and raising four children, she was active in Girl Scouts, community projects, DAR, the Louisa United Methodist Church and environmental causes. Many years were spent working on the environmental concerns of eastern Kentucky including mountain top removal. For over twenty years, Mrs. Wallace was very involved with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth serving as the chairperson from 1988-1990. Her environmental activism gained national attention in the 1990’s when she was featured in articles in Modern Maturity, Audubon magazine and on television’s “Earth Journal”, Tom Brokaw’s “Expose’ ” and “Investigative Reporter”. Both Governors Brereton Jones and Paul Patton appointed her to the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission. She was recognized many times for her environmental work including the recent honor of being one of the dedicatees of Wendell Berry’s book of essays, “Our Only World.” Her parents, her older brother Dr. Jack Lester Frasher, and her son Bradley Frasher Wallace preceded Patty in death. She will be missed by her husband Virgil C. Wallace, her brother Charles Portis Frasher (Joyce), daughters Rebecca Wallace Pugh (Scott), Sara Wallace Henry (Joe), Amy Wallace Whelan (Jerry), six grandchildren Ethan Berg, Will Henry, Dove Henry, Josie Whelan, Wesley Whelan, Annie Whelan, two step-grandchildren Lauren Vick and Ross Pugh, two step great-granddaughters Payton and Grayson Vick, and many nieces and nephews. Betty Jo Jasper Gray, 75, of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away Friday, Feb. 20, 2009. She was born Jan. 12, 1934, in Covington, Ky., to Marvin and Ruby Jasper. She was a registered nurse who retired from Southwest Health Center of Methodist Hospital. Her husband, James E. Gray, preceded her in death. Survivors include children, Carol Gray, Donna McCoy, Bev (Ron) Magness, and David Gray; grandchildren Heidi (Jon) Spencer, Alyssa Magness, and Jared Magness; and great grandchildren Tyler McKinney, Jayden Spencer, and Halle Spencer. MONROE, GA: William Ronald Holloway, “Ron” was born on February 6, 1930, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Dr. Judson B. Holloway and Thelma Shelton Holloway. He died June 30, 2016 after a long illness. He was a graduate of Harding High School in Marion, OH, Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. After college he served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He earned a Masters Degree in Religious Education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, where he met his future wife. He served Southern Baptist churches as Minister of Education for 28 years and then served 13 years as Assoc. Dir. of Missionary Personnel at the Home Mission Board in Atlanta of the Southern Baptist Convention. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, golfing and being with family. He is predeceased by his parents, step-mother Doris Stansbury Holloway, brother Arthur S. Holloway (Ruth), sister June Holloway Sanders (Harold) and son John Arthur Holloway, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Roemelle S. Holloway, Monroe, GA; daughter Ronda F. Croucher, General Jr., 82, of Beavercreek, passed away Sunday at Miami Valley Hospital. He is preceded in death by his parents General and Thelma (Whitaker) Croucher, brother Carroll Croucher and sisters Corsie Collins and Jean Cornett. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Beverly Croucher of Beavercreek; children Linda (John) Travillian, Steve Croucher and Mike Croucher, all of Beavercreek; brother Sam (Mary) Croucher of Lexington, KY; sister Joyce (Bill) Bishoff of Beavercreek; grandchildren Lauren Travillian, Kelly Travillian, Ethan Croucher, Claire Croucher and Sam Croucher; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. He graduated from Stuart Robinson School as Valedictorian of his class, graduated from Berea College, Class of 1955, and received his Masters Degree from Central Michigan University. David O. Welch, 82, lifelong resident of Ashland, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2016, at King’s Daughters Medical Center. He was born September 5, 1934, in Ashland one of 8 children to the late John Leslie Welch and Mary Elizabeth Hammond Welch. David was a graduate of Ashland High School, Berea College and Harvard Law School. He practiced law for 58 years. David was a longtime member of the Board of Trustees of Berea College and currently served as an Honorary Trustee. He served as Corporation Counsel for the city of Ashland and then went on to serve as Mayor from 1976-1980. He was a founding member of the Ashland Human Rights Commission. He served as chair and was a longtime member of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights and was later inducted into the inaugural class of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights Hall of Fame. He was a current member of the Committee of Equal Opportunities of the Kentucky Council on Post-Secondary Education.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Joyce Ann Loy Welch of Ashland; sons, Scott Welch and wife, Laura of Charleston, WV, and Kevin Welch of Frankfort, KY; daughter, Cathy Welch Culbertson and husband, Robert of Georgetown, KY; grandchildren, Cam Culbertson (Serena), Will Culbertson (Katherine), Cate Culbertson Mart (Matthew), John Culbertson; and four great grandchildren.

God has led home His good and faithful servant, Wilma Haley Brewer, age 81, of 1335 Down Cutshin Road, Wooton, Kentucky. She passed away, Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Cindi Wimsatt, in Springfield, Kentucky, after a long and brave battle. She started her journey on this earth on September 11, 1935. Wilma was born to the union of Charlie and Bessie Chadwell Haley. As a coalminer’s daughter, she grew up in Bulan, Kentucky in Perry County. She attended school at Robinson Elementary and M.C. Napier High School. She cherished her many childhood friendships and looked forward to school reunions every year. She attended Berea College and returned to Perry County. She worked at Mount Mary Hospital, Hazard ARH, and Hazard Nursing Home. She married Charles Barton “Bud” Brewer on October 24, 1958. They were married until his death on January 16, 1977. She was retired from Hazard Nursing Home. Wilma was a member of Community United Wooton Presbyterian Church. She loved watching birds and was an avid reader of Christian fiction and the Bible. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, brother and sister and her many friends and neighbors, and her beloved dog, Trixie. Wilma also loved to watch game shows. Tommy Camper December 3, 2016 Obituary Condolences (1) Tommy Samuel Camper, age 86, of Marysville, formerly of Dublin, died Saturday, December 3, 2016 at The Ohio State University Ross Heart Hospital following complications from Parkinson’s Disease. He retired from Ashland Chemical Company in Dublin where he was an associate for 35 years. He received a bachelor’s degree in Geology from Berea College and was a veteran of the United States Army and was stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. He was proud in being one of four brothers who served in the armed forces. He was a member of the Vineyard Church in Marysville. Tommy enjoyed “getting a good sweat” by running a few miles after work or the weekend. He also ran in “Corporate Challenge” events for his employer. He was very fond of the movie, “Chariots of Fire”. Tommy also enjoyed the many years he played in the Ashland golf league. During his younger years in Kentucky, he coached his son’s little league baseball team and was a Boy Scout leader for troop. He also taught Sunday school for many years. He will be remembered as devoted dad, a loving husband and a hard-working provider. He was born on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 1930 in Buchanan, Virginia to the late Morris and Daisy Harlow Camper. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Jimmy and Bobby Camper; and two sisters-in-law, Patsy Camper and Virginia Flint Powell. He is survived by his wife of 62, years, Beaulah Mae Flint Camper, whom he married May 29, 1954; his children, Steven (Jenny) Camper of Columbus and Vicki (Nick) Primavera of California; two brothers, Sammy (Joyce) Camper and Kerry (June) Camper; a sister, Peggy (Boyd) Shaver; a brother-in-law, Sam Powell; a sister-in-law, Betsy Camper; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. ROANOKE — Clifton Marshall, 88, also known as Buddy, passed away in Roanoke on June 20, 2016 after several years of diminishing health. He was born May 13, 1928 to Mary Bess Hamilton and Harry “Jack” Marshall at home, “across the river” from Williamsville. The family later moved north along the Bullpasture Gorge where he and his sisters, Thelma Vincent and Betsy Faircloth, attended school in Williamsville and McDowell. He went on to Berea College in Kentucky and ignited his love of world travel and flying while serving in the Air Force. He met his first wife, Helen, in college and they raised three children, Victor, Susan and Kelli, in suburban Chicago, where Mr. Marshall’s career in retail management landed them. His love of flying was renewed as a hobby the family enjoyed as they often flew east to visit his parents near Williamsville. Another passion in his life was Marshall Logs, the rustic cabins that his father built along the Bullpasture during the Depression. Mr. Marshall and his second wife, Inara, retired in Roanoke, an easy drive to the Gorge that he so loved. Between traveling the world on World Wildlife Fund’s eco-adventures, he built a new cabin and upgraded several others at Marshall Logs, spending long stretches in his slice of heaven, with the generations of cabin folk he so cared for. His solid, loving presence and easy smile will be missed by family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 5 at Williamsville Presbyterian Church at 10:30 a.m.

SIDNEY WILLIAM FOX ’58 of Donalsonville, Georgia, passed away August 13, 2016. Following graduation from Berea and graduate studies at Iowa State University and the University of Minnesota, he began his professional career in the Agricultural Extension Service at North Carolina State University. Later he worked as a research chemist with Uniroyal Chemical, Cargill Foods, Bestfoods and Hormel Food Company. He also served two years in the U.S. Army. After retirement, he devoted his time to his farm in Donalsonville, where he specialized in raising cattle and growing pecans, cotton and peanuts. More recently he developed an interest in solar energy and worked as a consultant for a major solar farms company. Sidney was a native of Mars Hill, North Carolina, and enjoyed spending his summers there. He was active in the Donalsonville community and was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Donalsonville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Fox and a son, Gregory Fox.

SAXLEHNER, ANDREW CHARLES “AndySax”, 81, passed away at his home in Coral Gables, Florida on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 from heart failure. Originally from Hungary, AndySax was born to Alice Mayerberg and Lajos Saxlehner on November 1, 1934. He had a happy childhood surrounded by his parents and grandparents until the onset of World War II. During 1941, he was sent away to a Budapest boarding school. During the winter of 1944-45, under heavy bombardment and the Russian army approaching Hungary, he was rescued by his aunt Edith. He remained extremely close with Aunt Edith and family until his passing. AndySax and Aunt Edith returned to their hometown of Keszthely where he completed elementary school and then received his High School diploma from Keszthely Academic High School (“Gymnasium”) in 1953. Due to AndySax’s high scores on his graduation exam, he was accepted to the University of Economic Studies in Budapest. To pay for his studies, he played piano at various venues including a circus. Piano was always a life-long passion for him. He loved music, especially jazz. AndySax participated in the protests and preliminary fights of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He was present at the invasion of the House of the Communist Party. When the Soviet army entered Hungary with military tanks, AndySax fled to the West. He first entered a refugee camp in Austria and then boarded a military ship for the United States. Once in the States, Lutheran Refugee Services helped him with basic necessities along with a full scholarship to Berea University in Kentucky where he graduated with his degree in Economic Studies in 1958. He continued his studies at NYU, where he received his Masters in Business Administration in1961. AndySax went on to get his CPA certification. He worked in public accounting, working for NBC studios and New York public accounting firms. He was also a harness race horse handicapper with his own radio jingle ad, “Go to Rosecroft and relax, you will go home a winner with AndySax. ” In 1983 after several years in public accounting, AndySax started his own company, the SEC Institute, Inc., which specialized in providing workshops and seminars on SEC regulations (RSW, AAW IPO’s) for CPA’s and attorneys. In the beginning, AndySax wrote, taught and did all of the administration as well as all of the marketing. The SEC Institute was a very successful company for over 30 years. AndySax sold the company in January 2014. Along with being an accomplished pianist and a master storyteller, he was also an accomplished scuba diver and underwater photographer. He dove in over 1,000 places during his lifetime. AndySax enjoyed traveling and would return home to Hungary often to visit friends and family. AndySax will be remembered for his great love of animals and most of all, his love for people, friends and family. AndySax is survived by his four children, Andrea, Gary, Anna, Sarah, three (3) grandchildren (Drew, Patrick and Maddie) and his sister, Gladys de Barcza of Makaha, Oahu, HI and younger brother, Stephen R. de Bence of Temecula, CA. She was born on October 4, 1935 in Magoffin County, the daughter of the late Samuel Earl and Hortense Taylor May. She was a retired human resource clerk for Westinghouse – North American Phillips Companies, and was a self-employed tax consultant. She was a member of the Union Church in Berea. Tucker, Cephas Blaine, was eighty years of age when he went to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at his home. Born Nov. 30, 1935 to the late Gilbert Tucker & Emma Koger Tucker in Hilltop, KY. Attended and graduated from Berea College, then the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. For 60+ years he was active in ministry serving God and people. Led pastorates in Kentucky (Payneville & Henderson), Indiana (Brownsburg), North Carolina (Asheville) and Georgia (Doraville), and was an elder for many years at Church of Life in Madisonville. Taught or administrated in schools in Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia and Tennessee. Served the last years of his career in Monroe County where he was dearly loved and students. Loyal, faithful, funny, witty, caring, gentle and a true nobleman, in times when those are scarce, describe Blaine Tucker. He exemplified God’s love and will be dearly missed by family and friends. His favorite Bible verse was Isaiah 54:13 “All my children shall be taught by the Lord and great shall be the peace of your children”. Troy Lee Watson, age 79, was carried into the arms of Jesus, while surrounded by his family, on Sunday, August 28, 2016. Troy was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, and faithfully served as a building trades teacher (Ed.D) at South Doyle High School, for 27 years. Troy was a craftsman and an adventurer. He built his farm as a legacy for his family. He climbed glaciers in Alaska, canoed in the BWCA wilderness, explored national parks, camped in Colorado, and spent many summers at Edisto Beach. His wife, children and grandchildren were the light of his life. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Lou Warner Watson, whom he met at Berea College; and three children and their spouses, Brad and Camille Watson (Knoxville), Keith and Karen Lee Watson Stump (Knoxville), and Todd and Michelle Watson (Portland, Oregon); and six grandchildren, Bryce and Amber Watson, Mariah Watson, McKenzie, Keegan, and Konnor Stump, and Kaelyn Watson. Mattie Ruth Roberts, 78 of Old Eller Ford Rd. Weaverville passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville. She was the daughter of Byron and Ruth Capps Roberts. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Paul Reuben Roberts, daughter-in-law, Emma Jean Stanton Hale, sister-in-law Amelia Roberts and nephew-in-law, Tommy Pike. Ms. Roberts was born in Madison County and a lifelong member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She graduated North Buncombe High School in 1956, earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Berea College, KY in 1961, Masters in Education in Cleveland State University, OH in 1981 and Post Graduate in 1986. Ms. Roberts was a teacher of typing, short-hand and vocational business education in the Lorain City School System of Ohio for 26 years at Admiral King and Lorain High Schools. She retired in 1995. She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Hale of the home; son, Scott Hale of Sheffield Village, OH; grandson, Nathan Hale (Danielle) of North Ridgeville, OH; granddaughter, LeeAnn Hale of Sheffield Village, OH: great grandchildren, Maxwell, Ellie, Emma. She is also survived by a brother, William (Bill) Roberts, sister-in-law Juanita Roberts; and her friend, caregiver, and niece, Pam Tweed; including other nieces and nephews of her family along with her faithful 4-legged companion “Leo”. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Reverend Phillip Parker will officiate. Paul Stuart Peercy, 75, of Madison passed away peacefully October 20, 2016, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg after a lengthy illness. Paul was born November 26, 1940, in Monticello, Kentucky, the third of six children of Robert and Ernest (Bell) Peercy. Raised on a farm, Paul graduated from Berea College in Kentucky and received his MS and PhD in physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Paul was a researcher, manager, leader, educator, and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Paul married Cathy Christen of Dodgeville in 1965. His career took him to Bell Labs in New Jersey before 27 years at Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque, where he and Cathy raised sons Michael and Mark. In 1995 Paul became president of the semiconductor manufacturing supplier consortium SEMI/SEMATECH in Austin, Texas. Paul returned to Madison in 1999 as the Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, retiring from that position with Emeritus Status in 2013. Paul served as member and officer in numerous science, engineering, and educational organizations. Paul was a Member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Physical Society (APS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). A well-respected advisor, Paul served on the Board of Directors of Bemis Company, Inc., Sonic Foundry, Inc., Mason Wells, Meriter Hospital, and Thrive. Devoted to service, he also held many positions of leadership in the churches he attended. Paul is survived by his wife Cathy, children Michael (Suzanne Kuo) and Mark (Shellie), grandchildren Nathan, Brendan, Aaron, Kevin, and Jaden, his brothers Bob (Wilma) and Larry (Sharlett), his sisters Barbara (Raymond) and Betty, his brother-in-law Jerry Congleton, and his sister-in-law Carolyn Christen. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Helen, sister Virginia, brothers-in-law Rick Givan, Roger Christen, and Roland Christen, and sister-in-law Connie Christen. A private burial will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery outside Dodgeville. Announcement of a public memorial service is forthcoming. He was a retired hotel executive after spending a long and successful career with the Sheraton Hotel Corporation and various other hotel companies. He was also a member of the Hotel Association of America, and is listed in Who’s Who in Finance and Industry. He was born February 20, 1941, unto the union of the late Elmer, SR & Hettie Lockhart Austin in Independence, VA. Dr. Austin was a lifelong educator who loved learning, his students, and his colleagues. He held a doctorate and law degree & served as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and professor throughout his accomplished career. Jerry was the longtime superintendent of Mecklenburg County, Virginia and Harlan Independent Schools, Kentucky before retiring as a college professor from Eastern Kentucky University. Dr. Austin was a wonderful steward of the lamp of knowledge. He is preceded in death by sisters: Elly & Doris Austin and brother, Elmer Gene Austin, JR. Sharon Gayle Thompson Broadwater, 72, passed away peacefully in Williamsburg on December 8, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Sharon was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, on November 26, 1944, to Herbert and Mildred (Hendrickson) Thompson. Sharon loved learning and was an outstanding student. She attended Berea College and the University of Kentucky where in 1966 she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. That same year she married John Broadwater, whom she had been dating since high school. After college, Sharon and John lived in various locations, including a two-year assignment in the Marshall Islands of Micronesia, where they both became avid scuba divers. Sharon taught middle school and high school science in several locations until 1978, when the family moved to Williamsburg, where she entered graduate school at the College of William and Mary. In 1984, she received her Ph.D. and began teaching science in WJCC schools. In 1988, Sharon joined the faculty at William and Mary, where she remained until her retirement in 2007 as Associate Professor of Biology. Sharon had a zest for life and knowledge, and studied all aspects of biology as well as more esoteric subjects such as chaos theory and human perception. However, the real focus of her attention and love was her family. She was devoted to her husband, two daughters and, eventually, her four grandsons. Sharon is survived by her husband, John, of Williamsburg, VA, daughter Jennifer Noelle Miller, her husband Todd, and their sons, Noah, Lucas, and Gabriel, of Williamsburg, VA; daughter April Renee Clark, her husband Rob, and their son, Ayres, of Knoxville, TN; brother Gary Thompson of Ringling, OK; brother Michael Thompson of Cedar Hill, TX; and sister Elizabeth Pickering of Duncanville, TX. Sharon’s life will be celebrated at a memorial and reception to be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 17, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188. Helen Wirth Keck Keener, 96, a deeply religious person who expressed her faith through prayerful caring for others, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, in Hoffman Estates. She was born Feb. 26, 1912, in Chicago. She was compassionate in her caring about children as a private and public kindergarten teacher, beginning in Fox River Grove. This love of children expanded to several preschool programs in Palatine and other United Methodist churches in northern Illinois. Additionally, she started what was known as a “Keenergarten” in Berea, Ky. Music and education were her passions in the Fox River Grove Community Methodist Church for many years. She, along with Christian friends Larry Olsen and Ray Kostner, brought their gifts of music to area nursing homes for more than five years. At age 13, she played the piano for a church wedding and ended her music career by teaching organ at age 93 while in a nursing home. While serving in many positions of leadership, her musical talents were used for the Job’s Daughters and Eastern Star. For more than 15 years, she was a “nanny” for many families in the area, especially in Waukegan and Barrington. In the seventh and eighth decades of her life, she traveled to Evanston to care for an elderly person as her companion, friend and helper several times a week, while living with her grandchildren in Algonquin. She traveled with her family to all the states of the United States except Hawaii, and also traveled to Europe several times with her lifelong friend of 82 years. While her 15 grandchildren were growing up, she was privileged to interact with their life experiences. Linda Cordle, Ann Diaz, Andrew Keck, Matthew Keck, Christopher Goetze, Lacinda Souer, James, John, Stephen Manock and Mary Woodward-Kreitz, Timothy, Jon, Merri, Paul and Kandy Manock all have been blessed with her love for them. In addition, she could claim some 30 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. From her second marriage, she acquired 23 more wonderful people and grandchildren to love. She is survived by her son, the Rev. Donald C. (Sue) Keck, and her daughter, Doris Manock. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Wirth and Katherine (Ernst); her first husband, Charles R. Keck; her second husband, Orrin L. Keener; her brothers, John and Clarence Wirth; and two sons-in-law, Lorenz Goetze and Lyle Manock. Margaret Carlene Judy, died peacefully at Forsyth Medical Center on Monday, December 12, 2016. Carlene was born in Asheville, NC on September 10, 1946, the daughter of the late Reverend Dr. Carl W. Judy and Margaret Brannan Judy, United Methodist missionaries to Korea, She spent the majority of her childhood in Korea, graduating from Seoul Foreign High School. She attended Berea College, but before her senior year, she was in an accident which left her quadriplegic. After 2 years in rehabilitation and recovery, she lived independently for 47 years. She graduated from the University of California at Riverside, receiving the Chancellor’s award and becoming a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She went on to earn a Master’s from UNC-CH. She lived in Riverside, CA working at UC-R, in Hickory, NC working at IHF, in Charleston, SC working at the Port Authority, in Salisbury, NC working at Food Lion and Winston-Salem working at Wachovia (First Union), from which she retired. She was a resident of Arbor Acres and a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. She is survived by her brother, K. Wesley Judy and his wife, Paula; her sisters, Joy Joss and her husband, Kirby, and Esther Underwood and her husband, Bill Underwood; four nephews, Joshua Judy, Kyle Joss, Matthew Joss, Will Underwood and two nieces, Tabitha Judy and Heather Strickler. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM on December 15, 2016 at Arbor Acres, Fellowship Hall, with Rev. Wesley Judy officiating. Visitation will follow the service. CARTER CITY – Ronald Lewis Morgan, 64, of Carter City, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at his residence after a sudden illness. He was born Oct. 1, 1949, in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of the late Lewis and Thelma Bush Morgan. He was employed by the Carter County School District for 41 years, 36 of which were at Carter Elementary as a teacher, basketball coach and principal. He truly loved working with children. Ron greatly enjoyed deer hunting, UK basketball, spending time with family and friends and church activities. He was a member of Iron Hill Church of Christ, where he was the adult lesson teacher. He is survived by his wife, whom he married Sept. 5, 1969, Joann Ramey Morgan; two sons, James (Angela) Ronald Morgan and Paul (Marcie) Vernon Morgan, both of Grayson; two grandchildren, Mallory Morgan and Trevor Lewis Morgan; two step-grandchildren, Darren and Brandon Walker; three brothers, Dale Morgan, Gale (Joletta) Morgan and Doug Morgan, all of Olive Hill; and a sister, Margaret (Troy) Roark of Olive Hill. She was an honors graduate from Berea College, a retired artist, weaver and teacher and an exhibiting member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen for more than 30 years. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Bill Stark of Georgetown, two daughters Jon Elizabeth (Tony) Hortenbury of Georgetown, and Venessa (Tony) Haden of Louisville. Mrs. Stark bequeathed her remains to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine Body Bequeathal Program for use in the furtherance of medical science and education. There will be no services. Anne Roecker, 40, passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2016 in Au Train, Michigan. Anne had bravely dealt with chronic pain for many years after suffering a broken neck in a car accident several years ago. The last year of her short life was spent writing about and advocating for the rights of people suffering from chronic pain. Anne was a 2000 graduate of Berea College where she majored in English and Music. She loved music, opera, movies, traveling, scuba diving and reading. Her favorite author was Jane Austen. Anne also competed regionally and nationally on the AAU and USAKF (karate) competition circuits. She taught and coached younger dojo members, who have competed and won regional and national competitions. Anne was a 2nd Degree Black Belt, AAU National Championship All-American and AAU National, Regional, State Champion. In 2005, Anne graduated from the University of Toledo College of Law. After graduation she was hired by the Chicago law firm of Katten Muchin Rosenman where she worked as an attorney for several years. She won several awards while employed by Katten and especially enjoyed her pro bono work for the firm. Surviving are Anne’s husband, Lee E. Roecker (Au Train, Michigan), mother and stepfather, Melissa and Randy Osborne (Berea, Kentucky), stepson, Sam Roecker (Des Moines, Iowa) and many extended family members including her three cats, Taylor, Danielle and Lewis. Private family services will be scheduled at a later date.
